Josue Nava For my sixth entry I was recommended the book Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. It was quite diverse with tons of layers. An emotional story of a young boy who we see grow up into a young adult that survives a great deal of bullying because he's different. A great book that touches you on a very emotional level a roller coaster in words. So our story begins with a boy with the given name of Peekay who is South-African who is English that pretty much is an orphan at the young age of five. His mother is still alive but had some type of nervous breakdown. So he is brought up by a Zulu nanny named Mary. Shortly after he is sent to a boarding school where he is the only english-speaker. He is brutally tortured and bullied by the other boys that are much older than him. I constantly felt that the Judge, a senior boy, and his gang was gonna kill him. The Afrikanns woman who heads the boarding school who instead of offering consolidation for him; walks around the school like the big shit whacking her walking stick. When he goes back home a tribal chief fixes his bed wetting problem by opening Peekay’s mind to dreaming of a place with waterfalls and 10 stones where he can find him, this is what is treated as the power of one. He returns back to school with his pet chicken named grandpa chook. We learn that Peekay is super smart but decides he must hide his brilliance. Toward the end of the year that stupid makes Peekay eat human poop and kills granpa chook, who was his only friend. He is sent somewhere else on a train after he gets home. He meets several new people but one of them is Hoppie a boxer who changes his perspective and his dream to become world champ is born. At the train station he is greeted by his mother who had fully recovered from a breakdown. The author really wanted to mess with your feelings in this book. He raises you up just to drop your heart. Highly recommend this book still quite a lot drama to unfold.
