Michael Vey - Rise of the Elgen

The book that I chose to do my book review on is “Michael Vey, Rise of the Elgen.” This book is the second one in the series and is such an fantastic book. Michael Vey, Rise of the Elgen has elements where there is Romance, Suspense, Power, and Danger throughout the story. It is a book that is appropriate for kids and adults, all ages, and yet still captivates everyone who is reading it.

The two main genres in this book is Suspense and Danger because so many things are tied into them but yet they are both key points to the story. It is very suspenseful because throughout the book, they are trying to get Michael Vey’s mom because the evil Elgen captain, Dr. Hatch, has taken her away into a Starxource Power Plant in Puerto Maldonado. Getting all the way from Idaho to Puerto Maldonado without the Elgen taking away the kids is very nerve wracking. Many times, the Elgen almost take away the kids but never succeed because with the teamwork the kids have and with their electricity that they obtain. At times, my heart was racing so fast because I was so worried that the kids were dead for sure but in the end, it always works out. In the story, the kids get into many dangerous situations because the Elgen found them. The Elgen are filled with bad men so whenever they have ahold of those kids, it’s never a pleasant time. It is also very dangerous for the kids to save Michael’s mom because she is in the Starxource Power Plant of the Elgen. They have to go undercover and make sure they don’t get caught inside the power plant or they are dead for sure.

Personally reading this book just made sense to me. The way the author writes his paragraphs into shorter chapters helped me get more involved and excited to keep reading. I would read some chapters and I would feel so accomplished that I would want to keep reading which helped me finish the book. I am a slower reader for sure so reading this book just made me feel like I was improving as a reader and it helped me stay captivated into the story.

Richard Paul Evans, the author of the Michael Vey series, son Michael has a case of tourette’s syndrome like the character Michael Vey has. Michael Vey experiences tourette’s syndrome everyday of his life that portrays a big role but he doesn’t let that define him. Richard Paul Evans wrote this series for his son Michael to show the power of people inside of themselves. He doesn’t want people to feel like they have to be defined by their tourette’s and writing Michael Vey will hopefully help people forget that he experiences with tourette’s syndrome himself and in the story people will see Michael Vey for what he is as a person but to still remember what kind of disease he experiences every day.

There wasn’t a time when reading this book where I felt that I wasn’t captivated or lost. It always had me thinking and my mind turning which had me at my toes. It is a great book for both teenagers and adults because it has maturity that many adults may appreciate but yet the drama for teens to stay captivated. Reading Michael Vey, Rise of the Elgen has taught me many life lessons that I can apply to my everyday life.
