The 'no swearing, please' put me in mind of a cartoon I used to read as a kid. It was called Rick O'Shay and Hipshot, by Stan Lynde, and took place in the old West. In one panel, Quyat, a young boy, sees Hipshot hurt himself and overhears him say "!@#@$!
Enthusiastically, Quyat repeats it. At that moment, his adoptive father, Deputy Rick O'Shay, walks out and hears him. Shocked, he gives Quyat a good swat.
Quyat's response is, of course, "!@#$!"
Recently my dearly beloved's daughter accidentally got sunscreen in her two-year-old's eye. She gave it a good rinse out then took her to A&E just to be sure. The docs were all busy so there was a bit of wait, but no problem - there's a corner with lots of toys. Little 'un was drawn there immediately, but dropped one - and repeated what her mother says when she drops something. Naturally it was all quiet at the precise moment she said, "Oh, b****er!"
It's amazing how it seems like a switch is thrown and a previously inarticulate little girl suddenly knows more words than might be comfortable for a parent...
