message 1: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments I'm just going to start with, I don't care who you are, I'll probably friend you. The exception is if you don't like the genres I do. So pretty much everyone who's ever looked at this group would get approved.

I got two requests recently from people who don't read anything I like wanting to be friends. I'm confused. What do I do with them? Why would they want to follow my reviews? One is learning English through reading. Okee, I'm good with that. I like to encourage even if most of his books aren't my type. *approve*

One was an author who liked thrillers, memoirs, and poetry. 0.0 Why would he want me to follow him? I don't like war stories! Why? Because they make me sad. So. do I say yes? I can see the connection. I adore books about human trafficking, but usually with romance - dark and light both. (Dark, falls in love with owner like Tears of Tess - Light, falls in love with savior or he saves her friend who was a slave).

Am I thinking too much on this? Opinions, please.

message 2: by Robin (new)

Robin Hill (robinhill) | 1528 comments The author might be trying to build his own friend base to sell his books. I've gotten those before where I'll approve, then immediately get a book rec of their book or a message about it. I'd just ignore that one. And some people just like having lots of "friends." I tend to approve everyone, but only mark people I know or have a lot on common with as "top friends."

message 3: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments I think Robin is prob right. But I would decline just because, what's the point you have nothing in common. No reading similarities so why? But that's just me. I just worry they have another agenda.

message 4: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) Tessa, I've almost posted this question several times in the past. I get about one request a month from someone whose reading tastes are zero like mine, usually an author or someone from a country whose first language isn't English. I ignore both. I also usually ignore authors who look to be start-up with books that are not my type of romance (cheesy or porno romance). I've just had too many of them over the years try to get me to read their books after I friend them.

Don't feel bad about it! There are many people on GR who never answer friend requests or only accept them from people they 'know'. (I realize that's easier said than done--after declining many of them over the years, I still feel bad every time.)

message 5: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Tessa, I have mine set up so that if they request to be my friend they have to answer question as to why. I havent had anybody really weird (all romance readers who have seen me around) send a request. I have had a few weirdos PM me though.

But if an author tries to friend me just for sole purpose of promoting their book? Big fat decline!!! Or if someone who doesnt romance?? Decline.

message 6: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments :) Thanks, guys! *hugs* I've been getting a lot of requests like that. I do think I need to go through and figure out who's top friend. I never really notice it when it's up there.

message 7: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Haha Tessa. I feel you. I think I got a request from the same male author a day or so ago. It seemed like a cheap grab for widening his reader/PR base, so I quietly clicked the Ignore button. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't know him from Adam so I'm not gonna stress about rejecting him.

Leslie, I like your idea of asking a question. I do get some pretty random friend requests, so I go in and check their profile. If we like similar books/ genres and they look legit I will usually friend them. Otherwise I Ignore.

I've also had the occasional issue of accepting a friend request then finding my feed gets filled up on daily overload with reams of their stuff. I've unfriended a couple over that kind of thing. BTW when you unfriend someone they don't get a message saying so. I guess you just quietly disappear from their feed. Nice.

I have also unfriended someone because their main reading interest turned out to be highly religious texts, whereas I'm more interested in romance (duh). Another one I unfriended because they were boasting on GR they'd reached 200 friends and I think I just was another notch on their belt :/

But, some of the randoms I've friended have turned out to be fab and have given me lots of great book ideas.

message 8: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments :) I have friended people from rl and games. Most of them have very different tastes than me, but... *shrugs* I don't mind.

Jan (jan130) YES! That's the guy who tried to friend me! I wonder how many friend requests he's made recently?? Influences: Graham Greene, Stieg Larsson. Indeed. *snorts*

message 11: by Kooloo (new)

Kooloo | 596 comments Ok well I'm glad I got rid of him... besides his bio reads like a fake resume lol

message 12: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) I got one from him too.

message 13: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments I unfriended him. His list of new friends was just weird and yeah, NOTHING IN COMMON.

message 14: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments I came to GR to organize my books and talk with other WOMEN about romance books. For me, it's girls only. No boys allowed!!! If I ever have a man friend request me, it will be auto-decline.

I actually want to unfriend a few that I dont interact with but have been afraid to. I dont want to look like a jerk.

message 15: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments I love having friends who read all over the world. That speak English. Haha and read English. It's so great to share a good book or hear of a great romance book they have read. I think I like similar books to you too, Leslie. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who won't friend those weird guys. 😜

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments I think we all got "friend-bombed" by this person!!! I hardly think he was dying to become best book buds with me...so NEXT!!!!

I love PNR and urban fantasy, so I welcome male friends. I wish more men did read at least PNR since it is usually filled with action and all the stuff urban fantasy has.

message 18: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Tessa, no judgement here. You be friends with whoever makes you comfortable. 😉

My reads are all pretty "girly" that I dont think many men would be interested in discussing them. 😆 If I even mention romance in front of my husband or son, they start eye-rolling & gagging.

This so reminds me of a conversation with my husband last night. We are getting rid of cable, so we were going through Amazon Prime and making a list of "To Be Watched" stuff. Everytime I added anything remotely girly, his response was "And now I get to add a war movie AND something with shooting, violence and car chases". Hardly seems fair!! Boys are dumb!

message 20: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Lisa, I swear they think they will get their man card revoked if they touch a purse or watch a romance! Hee hee

message 21: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Leslie wrote: "I actually want to unfriend a few that I dont interact with but have been afraid to. I dont want to look like a jerk."

Leslie, they probably won't even notice you've unfriended them. GR doesn't send them a message when you unfriend. They might eventually notice your updates have stopped appearing in their feed maybe. But you won't look like a jerk. I've quietly dumped a few and it feels good. Just do it!

message 22: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Same here girls, love the romance stuff, The notebook, Dear John, The Batchelor. Especially with a house full of girls and my husband says ......... he doesn t get a say. Well maybe he does. But the books I like. No boys would like them. 😜🤣🙄🙊

Grey | 2385 comments Mod
well, wtf... I feel shitty, I didnt get a friend request from him... hmph. I'm just gonna sit over here and pout about it. or maybe I did. idk. I tend to accept most people too... I don't really go thru my feed very often to be honest. I keep up with you guys here and my own books...*shrug* that makes me sound stone cold, doesn't it?

right now, I'm just super busy with real life stuffs, well ... not right now, right now... because *sigh* it's November, and life on my corner of the planet is much better in November, but overall, I have been insanely busy since school started... so I haven't been able to keep up as well I would like to in the book world, but school vacations are coming. Thank God!

Haha Lisa. I've noticed how when we're flicking around TV channels vainly searching for something to watch, my hubs eyes are always caught if there's some shoot 'em up going on. But a costume drama? Nup. Eyeroll (his) and he keeps on flicking to another channel...

hahaha! I feel left out too Grey :) but I'm good with that...I've only ever got a couple of requests from people out of the blue, again, authors I think...I always do the compare books thing and see how many friends we have in common

I've never seen The Notebook. What is Dear John? And I never watch the bachelor. Does this make me a fail? lol

Honest truth - I love romance in my books, not my movies. I'm odd like that.

Tessa, Tessa, Tessa! You've never seen the Notebook??? Dear John is another Nicholas Sparks novel - in a very unusual way, I liked the movie better than the book ;)

message 29: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments I've only seen part of one Nicholas Cage movie and it was enough to say HELL NO. lol That sucker made me cry and I only saw the end!

Hahaha! Yes well, you'll need tissues for the notebook

message 31: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Tessa I'm with you. I don't often like romantic movies. I do like some of those classic English ones like Notting Hill, but I've never read OR watched a Nicholas Sparks movie. Just never appealed....... I don't watch the bachelor or any of those dating shows either. Or Kardashians etc. But I still love my romance books and HRs.

Eep! *hides from The Notebook*

Right? Though, I rarely watch TV or movies, to begin with. But those never occupy my brain enough to keep it from thinking about five hundred other things at the same time. :(

message 34: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Oooooh Tessa an Jan, if you really truly absolutely love romance do yourself a favour and watch the Notebook. It's sooo much better than the book. I usually don't watch the movie if I read the book, as I then hate the movie. But this is exceptional. My favourite all time movie. If you don't love it? I think I've seen it 20 times. I bought it on DVD. There's a seen where there is all these white ducks in the water, it's so beautiful. Let me know what you think. I hated the movie of Fifty Shades yet I loved the books.

message 35: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Hmmm. OK, I guess I have to at least try it one day then. But I know my hubs wouldn't want to sit through it, so I'll have to find a time when he's out. Maybe it's on Netflix?

I only saw part of FSOG on TV randomly one night, but neither actor chosen for the main roles appealed at all.........

Jan (jan130) Tessa wrote: "Right? Though, I rarely watch TV or movies, to begin with. But those never occupy my brain enough to keep it from thinking about five hundred other things at the same time. :( "

Yeah I'm like that. There're only a few exceptional films or shows I can fully concentrate on and get totally hooked into. My latest fav (on TV in Australia) was the series Versailles. I FLOVED it! But series 2 has finished now :( But I hear they're making series 3 :) Can't wait.

message 37: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments I remember you talking about that. I'll have to see if BBC America has it.

message 38: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Melinda, I'll give it a try if it becomes available.

FSOG, I was too disturbed by how innocent t he kept looking in the commercials. That seems wrong.

message 39: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Haha.

message 40: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Tessa the Notebook is old like 2004 so you should get it on Netflix or something. It's beautiful. Every time I watch it, I say "I love that movie". I bought it for my Mum and she said she loved it too.

message 41: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Fsog, no romance, they missed the connection in the book. I was soo disappointed. Hated it. Not going to the next one.

Alexander Skarsgard...

message 45: by Nay (new)

Nay (4ukcats) OMG, The Notebook is THIRTEEN years old! Wow! I feel SO old!

message 46: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments I don't mind his lips, so much as his as his expressions though I can see why. I ALWAYS look at lips, due to being hard of hearing (Gotta read lips). BUT! That picture says everything since his smile is creepy!

I'd take Alexander Skarsgard as Christian Grey. He DEFINITELY doesn't look innocent. lol

yeah, I'd have to agree that I didn't like JD at all for CG...Charlie would have been my first pick!! <3
I've only seen the first movie and thought it was ok...

message 50: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Haha Kooloo. Now that you mention it, I don't like his lips either. I saw this actor in a couple of eps of some creepy series about a serial killer and he was the killer. A much better fit for that actor than Christian Grey I think.
