I was planning to use Neon Genesis Evangelion, Vol. 1 for this task, because Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is a new author to me. But I noticed that Gainax is also listed as an author. Actually, Gainax is the Japanese anime studio that produced the anime from which the manga is based on, not the author of the manga. So, I'm wondering if I still can use the 1st volume of Evangelion for this task. Even if Gainax is considered an "author", I have not watched or read anything by this studio before.

We go by what's on GR - since Gainax is listed as an author, that's what we go by. However, since you haven't read anything by this studio before, or by the actual author, it doesn't much matter - you're good!
If it’s a author I discovered this season (ie i’m Reading a new author for another challenge) - does that count or should I switch books and make this first book?
