Justin Costello Bone Gap by Laura Ruby is an odyssey that goes through many ups and downs and at some points makes you curious whether it is real or fantasy what is going on. Two teens are met with challenges such as their mother leaving them and going with a "new man". They meet a girl under secretive circumstances and she never really opens up how and why she is there in the first place. She is taken away even under mysterious circumstances, as the book moves on Finn tries to tell people she was kidnapped no one believed him even his brother. He decides he will find her on his own when he does the town rejoices that she has been found. All the while the boys go through their own journeys turning in some points from boys to young men. I would recommend this book for a personal read but would be wary of it in a classroom setting because of the content.

Darwin I disagree!

Schwoopdeboo I would disagree, to the first commenter in this discussion. I found this book to be very suitable in a class setting. It is very unlike any other book I’ve read in high school and I found that quite refreshing as many of the books they typically have us read are bland and boring to discuss. I do agree, that maybe, since it is written in the air of magical realism that the interpretations of when it takes it’s dips into it may be vastly different among every student on what they think it means, and may be frustrating that there is no definitive answer to be had. I personally found this aspect to be most engaging in the classroom when we discussed what it could possibly mean, my classmate’s ideas were all different and that personally kept me roped in.
