10.7 - What's Your Favorite Hobby?
January is National Hobby Month. A hobby is an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure. It is not essential to life, though you may enjoy doing it, and can be put aside, if necessary. Read a novel (fiction) in which your favorite hobby is prominently featured.
Ex: A Killer Plot (writing); The Secret, Book and Scone Society (reading); The Quilter's Apprentice (quilting); The Shop on Blossom Street (knitting); Ready Player One (playing video games); The Art of Fielding (playing baseball)
Required: State your hobby when you posts AND, if it's not obvious from the book's main page, explain the connection to the task.

Going to art museums and finding sculptures for my other hobby Waymarking.com ( an online scavenger hunt game)....so, I think this should work-

Sorry, Ed, this is a nonfiction book. The task requires a a novel (fiction) in which the hobby is featured prominently. Maybe a novel in which the main character is an art museum curator or a sculptor? Or one that's set in an art museum?

Would Lost in a Good Book work for "reading"?

Would The Small Backs of Children work for photography? The book's story turns around a particular photograph, so, wondering if that is prominent enough.

It sounds like photography is essential to the plot. So, yes, that would work. {Sounds good, too!}

Can I check that the hobby doesn’t have to feature in the book as a hobby? For example, would Candy Cane Murder work for a hobby of baking, even though the reason baking features is that the main character owns a bakery which plays a prominent role in the story.

Correct. The hobby does not have to be a hobby in the book (although it can be). The main character my be a professional at whatever your favorite hobby is. So, yes, this book would work if your favorite hobby (or one of them) is baking.

i need to find a book about sleeping - ha! and i'm not kidding when i say sleep is a hobby...if i'm not at work or training, then i am either reading or sleeping because I'm always on the go...

Sorry, Dee. I don't think sleep is a hobby. A hobby is something you can put aside and not do. Sleep is a required bodily process not just something you do during your leisure time.

Opting to just lay in bed and snooze rather than getting up and doing what I should do? Cause i sleep at night but weekends are either nap on couch or bed most days of not in class - I could theoretically not do that on weekends (and do if I have plans)

Sorry. No. Sleep is not a hobby. Sleep deprivation causes many harmful effects on the body. It is a required bodily process. You could stop reading. You could stop training, too. Though you might not like the effects, you wouldn't die. These are hobbies. You cannot stop sleeping any more than you could stop breathing. Breathing isn't a hobby either. ;-)

It looks like White Mare's Daughter and The Horse Goddess would have epic riding scenes and Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood explains some of the background for Warcraft. If so, any of them would fit your stated hobbies. Your choice. Just make sure you state your hobby and explain the connection when you post.

Yes, definitely. That book sounds a bit like Ready Player One, which was a surprise favorite of mine last year. I hope this one is good, too, since I just added it to my TBR list!

So, Can I use The Bark Before Christmas in which the main character trains and shows poodles , since I spend a great deal of my spare time working with my Miniature Poodles?

It looks like I've messed up on this task once already. I want to make sure I choose an appropriate book.

From the GR description, one of the characters in The Sleepwalker takes to swimming to try to solve the mystery. Is that enough to make swimming "prominent"?

It's really hard to tell from the description. If the girl swims the river once or twice, then no. If it's an ongoing thing throughout the book, then yes. You'd have to read it and then explain how it fits.

If you're looking for a surer thing (without having to read the book first), these lists might help. Just be careful as they are a mix of fiction and non-fiction. You're looking for fiction.
