I think Gansey didn't want to do it, but he knows it would be effective and his last resort.

Gansey's father is universally loved but I think his son feels alienated, like he doesn't really identify with them. Helen seems to try to overplease or earn her mother's approval. It kinda feels like rich people problems, but problems nonetheless.
