MOBY DICK **START 1/1/2018**
Sounds wonderful.....this is also on my 2018 Classic TBR list! I am committing to 10 classics in 2018. Would love to join you on this!Alison
Sweet!! I’m excited to hopefully get into it. I had a roommate who adores this book. Though, if I am miserable I’m not ashamed to tap out.
Hi MichelleCH and Elishia! Welcome aboard! It's good to have you hunting the white whale with us.=) JMSS
I'm joining in on this one, because Moby Dick is one of my husband's favorite classics, and I've been meaning to read it for half of forever.
I'll join this one. It's been sat on my kindle for a while now, doing nothing, might as well at least try it!
Hello fellow tbr climbers! I’d like to join in on this read. Like a lot of you I’ve owned it and meant to read it forever.

Thank you! Looking forward to finally tackling this one.
Unfortunately, I think I have to bow out of the January start date. Or rather, I won’t be able start until mid January at best. I was excited atbtve prospect of buddy reading but book clubs with people in my real life have taken priority (don’t worry the books are on my TBR) I’ll start it if When I can that just might not be until February. Happy reading
Katie, Join when you can, we have my Heavy reads list spaced out about every four months. As you read, join in the discussion. Real life should be a priority over fiction... even if we'd love for life to be otherwise!
Thanks for understanding! I do still plan on reading Moby Dick very soon into 2018, I just know that realistically it will be mid February before I can get to it at least.
Well, all it's December 26th, and with a week left in the year, if you are like me, and out of books for 2017 and anxious to start your 2018 Climb, you are welcome to start MOBY DICK, if you know you Won't hit the 50% within the week. As for me, I think I'm going to start... I made all my 2017 reading goals and I'm ready to start my 2018 reading list!
Happy New Year, Everyone! Time to board our ship and head out to hunt MOBY DICK. First check in will be in about two weeks. Feel free to comment at any time before that.
=)
July
*Note: I started to read all the initial comments on whaling... then skipped to the novel. I hope the rest of the book doesn't continue like that!
I will be starting this tonight via the Serial Reader app! Looks like there will be 79 issues so it'll take me awhille. If I start to really enjoy it I'll hunt down my physical copy to speed things up.
Ooohh... okay, I've had Moby on my list for years. Is there a structure ("Read to page XYZ before date ABC"?)...?
Brianna, I had not heard of serial reader. I was going to bail because I was feeling overwhelmed by book club books. But this makes it entirely possible. I’ll be crawling along with you for the next 79 days!
Katie wrote: "Brianna, I had not heard of serial reader. I was going to bail because I was feeling overwhelmed by book club books. But this makes it entirely possible. I'm really tempted to join in and read Moby Dick as well. Been on my TBR too many years!! But....I also am in the middle of too many other books and think there's no way I can get finished in January. Serial Reader with 10 minute chunks makes it sound do-able! :-)
Wow that serial reader app is cool. I just downloaded it so I think I am going to read Moby Dick along with everyone. Couple days behind so will probably do a couple days today.
I've tapped out, at about 2/3 of the way through. The slow pace was so grueling I ended up skimming to skip past the extensive "science" chapters, and even then, I found the action dull. This is just not for me, sadly!
Elishia wrote: "It's on Librivox if anybody wants to listen to it, my library only had abridged versions."I have this but not sure I want to tackle it or not. It just doesn't seem appealing to me right now. I have been thinking about it but was going to read it on Serial Reader.
The slow pace is dragging at me. I'm only a few chapters in and just... not feeling it at all. I'm'a keep reading because I want to get to some action before I think about throwing the towel in but still... bit eh
GlassasDiamonds wrote: "Ooohh... okay, I've had Moby on my list for years. Is there a structure ("Read to page XYZ before date ABC"?)...?"Hi, there is no structure... just read at your own pace. I'll try to post some questions/ topics in a week or so.

Brianna wrote: "Chapter 3 quote that amused me - [spoilers removed]"me either!
at least the one liners are keeping me interested as i wait to get onto the sea. i'm only on Ch 4...
Elishia wrote: "Yes im putting it aside for now"I've not put it aside, but it's hardly the first thing I want to pick up at the moment. Am 20% of the way through now though so I'll probably finish it but I doubt it'll score highly with me.
There are some humorous moments, though, I'll give it that.
Elishia wrote: "It's on Librivox if anybody wants to listen to it, my library only had abridged versions."I've been reading the book but switched to Librivox today while doing errands. The chapters I have listened to were done really well.
I'm a few installments behind schedule, but still working through it!thoughts through end of chapter 11: (view spoiler)
Hi Everyone! It's been a slow start to the year for me for reading and I'm only on chapter 11 of MOBY DICK.*Drop a note and let us know where you are at this mid month point!
*Anything especially delight you?
For me I loved the part where Ishmael is talking about being in a warm bed and not wanting to wake up.
Jessika wrote: "Oh good, I'm not as far behind the group as I thought. I'm currently on chapter 9, but expect to read some today. I do like Ishmael's one liners, as mentioned above. Not a lot has really happened y..."Yeah, even through 11 it's mostly been setting the scene and getting to know a couple of the characters. Not much plot yet!
I just finished Chapter 45 and I like feeling so close to the story's locations living in Rhode Island. There is so much history around Nantucket, New Bedford and Martha's Vineyard.

I've never been to Nantucket, but I've spent some time on the East coast, so at least I have some sense of the environment

1/21/2018CHECK IN
I've got to be honest, I'm not digging this book at all. I'm on Ch 22, and it is dragging... by my estimate, just about 100 pages into it. I always go to 200 pages before I call it "DONE," so, if in the next 20 chapters I'm still not feeling it, I'm jumping ship.
How's every one else sailing along?
I'm dragging along too. On the plus side the chapters are pretty short. On the negative, there are tons of the blighters. Most of which I think don't add to the story at all. I'm 80% of the way through now though so will finish but do not recommend >.<

We are opening the year with _Moby Dick_ by Herman Melville.
I've had this book on my list for 20 years. I've opened it twice, but have never read past the first page or two. 2018 is the year I hunt the white whale.
I ask that you check in at least once a week and leave a comment on your thoughts, wherever you may be in the book.
My personal rule is 200 pages before I "tap out" on a read, if I'm just NOT enjoying it. If you have a similar rule on books, just let us know when you've "tapped out."
This is going to be fun. I'm looking forward to reading MOBY DICK with you.
=) July
