Pretty Little Liars is a book about four high school girls whose friend went missing, and now they're getting strange messages from someone they don't know. The four main characters are Aria, Emily, Hanna, and Spencer. All the girls take on a character trope but with a twist and I really like how the author does that without making it seem unrealistic. Aria is the artsy hipster, Emily is the swimmer jock, Hannah is the popular “it” girl, and spencer is the incredibly smart overachiever. All their different personality types and characteristics leads to a diverse cast of girls and really makes the book seem more believable and brings life to the characters. Although I enjoy all the characters, Emily being my favourite I can't say I love that plot as much. I certainly do like the plot but compared to how well constructed each character is the plot feels somewhat lackluster. Cause when I go into the book to start reading I expect to have a murder mystery right off the bat, but instead it's more like a teen drama. However once the story does pick up pace a little better and gets passed its slow start the plot starts to get a lot more in-depth and mysterious. Also the author does a very good job of having each girl have a different conflict but intertwine all of them into a larger conflict. Overall it’s a fun read with great characters and a good plot. The story isn't confusing at any point but does make you invoke some thoughts and ideas to form your own opinions. Also the character development truly shines in this book because by the end all of the girls have changed, for better or for worse.
