J Q (johnniquest) | 1226 comments Welcome to our week long read-a-thon. That's right, at Hooked on Books we've decided that there aren't enough hours in a day, or days in a week, so our week long read-a-thons run for 8 days! Each participant reads from 12:01am on Saturday to 11:59pm on the following Saturday in their local time zone.

To sign up simply start yourself a post to track what you've read during the read-a-thon. Edit your post throughout the read-a-thon to let everyone know which books you've read & your total number of pages. Feel free to copy my post as a template.

TBR: After the Quake by Haruki Murakami Catch-22 (Catch-22, #1) by Joseph Heller

12/2: I've discovered that After the Quake is not the type of book to be read during a read-a-thon. I only read a total of 50 pages today, though I read each short story at least twice. My reading ritual went on a little like this: I read each story once, let it sink in, did some research on its possible symbolism, typed up some notes, then read the story again!

At a first glance, these stories seem disarmingly simple. However, they are filled with deep symbolism, and well worth the time to uncover their multiple layers of meaning. They cover a huge range of topics and emotions, from the placid paralysis one often faces before making an important decision to the disputable definition of reality offered by epistemology.

Excited to start Catch-22 tomorrow!

12/3: Today I read the first six chapters of Catch-22, which only amounted to an unimpressive 53 pages.

I usually do not allow myself any previous knowledge of the books I chose to read before I read them. As it turns out, Catch-22, with its seemingly unlimited number of characters and unorthodox time-line, is also not an easy read. With that being said, I am enjoying its sharp dark (and often nonsensical!) humor immensely, as well as its subtle philosophical inquiries and musings.

12/4: Another 6 chapters of Catch-22 today, which amounted to 67 pages!

The chapters are now starting to mesh, and I keep mentally shouting "A-ha!' when I decipher the meaning of a previous reference. Could I be finally getting the hang of the broken narrative? In any case, I am having a blast! :)

It was nothing against you Johnni!

I completely failed at meeting my Nano goals (which weren't even to write 50,000 words!) so I'm just looking forward to December and moving on from my month of writing failure!
What I did accomplish (and am quite proud of) is my mission to visit all 50 states!

I've finished it, and gave it a 4 star rating overall--5 stars for the first 700 pages or so, and 3 for the last 450. King creates seven complex and interesting children, and gives them all rich stories full of 1950's period detail that I found compelling. (I am about 6 years younger than these children would have been). The last pages focus on the children as adults in the 1980's; I found these to be a little fantastic and overblown. The horror was excruciating, but not terribly scary. There was a section (unrelated to the horror) that made me feel very squeamish, though.

Like you, I hadn't read any King until quite recently. I started with Mr. Mercedes, which I found to be rather ordinary. Then I read 11 25 63, which I adored and could hardly put down. I read a lot of nonfiction, and 63 was a convincing blend of early 1960's US history and fiction, 5 stars for me. I think I might try The Shining next.

J Q (johnniquest) | 1226 comments 38 readers is our current count!

Day 1: What is the the first thing you are going to read today?

I am starting Invictus by Ryan Graudin . I'm super excited about it! a bunch of my fave authors raved about it and it's marketed as "if the Firefly crew were teenagers and had a TARDIS"... these are a lot of my favorite things haha

If you want some reading sprints, don't forget about our Reading Sprints Forum.

You've already read more than me ;) Don't be too critical of yourself!

This read-a-thon is about setting your own goals and having a good time! You might be pushing to finish a single book, read a single page to get out of a reading slump, or read 3,000 pages. All are welcome and all are successes!

It's not about failing! Just have FUN! :D
