A Northern Light, by Jennifer Donnelly, is a historical novel that shares the story of a 16-year-old girl named Mattie Gokey and the death of Grace Brown. Mattie, who has big dreams of going to college in New York and becoming a writer, often finds herself making choices and promises to her friends and family that takes her away from achieving her goal. As Mattie lives and works on a farm along with her father and three younger sisters, who she has to take care of, since her mom died and her brother left, she also takes on the responsibility of working at a hotel called the Glenmore. At the Glenmore she has to help and serve guests in hopes of getting payed. One day at the hotel she had the duty of of serving a guest by the name of Grace Brown, whose body was later found in in a lake nearby. Before this tragedy, Mattie was given letters from Grace that contained secrets that weren’t to be revealed. Although making a promise to burn the letters, Mattie ended up breaking it after opening them and uncovering the dark truth behind a murderer. As other events occur, she debates whether she should stay with her family and marry the love of her life, or leave to New York and invent a new life and future on her own. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes romance, history, and a murder mystery which is actually based on a true story of 1906. This book was so thrilling that it drew me in and made me feel apart of it. The thing that I personally enjoyed about this book was that in every chapter she chooses a word of the day from her trusty dictionary, and finds ways to use them in different situations. I definitely encourage you to read this book to find out what happens to Mattie and explore the different experiences that lead up to her final choice.
