Around the World in 80 Books discussion

Post your nominations here for the February group reads. A significant portion of the book must be set in the featured location. We will be reading books set in Brazil and the province of Nova Scotia in Canada. We will also be featuring world mysteries translated to English. Here are lists to get you started:

For Translated Mystery, I nominate Return to the Dark Valley by Santiago Gamboa. It takes place in Colombia and is translated from Spanish.

For Brazil, I nominate Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis. Originally published in 1899, it is an 176 page classic.

For Nova Scotia, I nominate The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill.

For translated mystery I suggest Death on a Galician Shore set in Galicia in northwestern Spain. This is the second in a series by Domingo Villar written in Gallego about police inspector Leo Caldas. You don't have to have read the first novel to enjoy this. It's won several literary awards. And for Brazil I agree with Carol's suggestion of Dom Casmurro.

For Nova Scotia, I nominate Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald.

For Translated Mystery, I nominate: Blackwater by Kerstin Ekman.
