Sarah (sasstel) | 335 comments After some pondering, I’ve decided to go with an immigrant theme for this challenge. The plan is to read books with characters or narratives that explore the lives and experiences of different immigrant groups and settlers in the U.S. (leaving out the forced migration of African slaves since I did African American authors for this challenge last year). Here is my list.

Old
(1) Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane (1/4)
(2) How the Other Half Lives by Jacob A. Riis
(3) From Plotzk to Boston by Mary Antin (1/16)

New
(1) The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
(2) Bread Givers by Anzia Yezierska
(3) Christ in Concrete by Pietro Di Donato

Wild Cards
(1) No-No Boy by John Okada
(2) The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
(3) Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
(4) The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz
(5) Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat
(6) The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri

Alternates
(1) Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
(2) Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina García

2/12 completed.

How neat that you arranged it around a theme. You have a LOT of books I have not read but need to. I will be glad to see what you think of them.

I’m really looking forward to this challenge and had fun coming up with a theme!

I didn’t even realize there was a movie! I’ll have to check that out.

Melanti | 1894 comments Welcome to the challenge!

I've only read a couple from your list but you have several I've been meaning to read for quite a while. I bought Namesake a while back just because several people in this group seem to like her work.
