Rachel Crane This book has been one of my favorites! It was beautifully written, and I loved the history behind it. I’ve always been drawn to novels set in the 20s, and since this one has characters who actually lived makes it so much better. One of the things that I think really made the book one of my favorites was that it was told in first person. Most biographies are obviously told in third person, but the first person in this novel made it seem much more like a story with a plot and characters than a historical account of someone’s life.
I really loved the history behind the novel as well. I read The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway for my summer reading, and Ernest Hemingway is one of the characters in Z. Seeing this connection and seeing how author Therese Anne Fowler portrays Hemingway was very very interesting. A third thing that really pushed the book for me was the tumultuous relationship between Zelda and her husband F. Scott. I kept guessing at what would happen next in their relationship; everything was a surprise. They argued constantly, but also seemed to love each other more than any other couple in the novel. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who likes historical fiction, strong woman protagonists, and the 1920s!
