Paul (paullev) | 835 comments new time-travel series, streaming on Netflix-US, German w/English subtitles, highly recommended - my review (with moderate spoilers) https://paullevinson.blogspot.com/201...

Nancy (paper_addict) Got it added to my Netflix list!

I just jumped over here to ask if anyone was watching this. I'm almost halfway in and am really enjoying it. It's just the right amount of intriguing, mysterious, dark, and suspenseful.

Just be sure to watch it with the original German voices rather than the English dubbed version where deep-voiced men get high-pitched voices (and the dubs don't match the subs).

message 4: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) I saw the first two episodes last night.

I had to change the option to German language with English subtitles. When Netflix auto played the second episode, it changed the settings back to English language and no subtitles. Stupid Netflix.

message 5: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 835 comments Interesting - I set my Netlfix once, a couple of years ago, to always use subtitles, and that's what it does whenever I watch a movie or television series in a language other than English.

Nancy (paper_addict) I watched Hotel Beau Séjour on Netflix and I didn’t have to do anything and I didn’t have problems with 3% either.

But one was on my iPad and the other was on the DVD player. We got a new TV. Maybe the app on the TV is the problem. I will set it again and see what happens.

message 7: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 835 comments Yeah, that might be it. Netflix might not remember settings across devices.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) It did it again. I don’t see a way to save the setting. When episode three ends and it automatically starts to play the next episode it was dubbed. I had to exit out and reset it.

message 9: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 835 comments Hmm ... I just read again your comments here about Netflix - it's odd, in any case, that Netflix would change your settings after every episode. You might want to call their help line and see if they can provide any guidance.

message 10: by Jayne (new)

Jayne Hackett | 5 comments Discovered Dark over the weekend and binged on it. Truly dark and occasionally disturbing, I stopped noticing that it was dubbed. The end of the series closed with the perfect teaser.

message 11: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) I think we watched up to episode 5. I like it. I am impressed with some of the shows Netflix is putting out.

message 12: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 185 comments I got it figured out to watch in German with English subtitles. I am to like episode...4 or so. Man....I am intrigued.

message 13: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) I know, it’s really good. We watched watched episodes 6 & 7 last night.

Here is a new development with the subtitles versu dubbed issues I have been having. When I change the setting using Netflix’s on screen menu, it changes to English dubbed when auto playing the next episode.

Last night I did not use the on screen menu. I forgot to change it the English subtitles and German language. So when I grabbed the TV’s remote I saw a button for subtitles next to the rewind/pause/fast forward buttons. I pushed it and it came up with the Netflix options for the subtitles and this time it kept the changes when it auto played the next episode. Weird...

message 14: by Paul (new)

Paul (paullev) | 835 comments It has to do with the relationship between your smart TV remote and Netflix. Unfortunately, if you're not using a universal remote - and even they can have problems - every remote has a slightly different set of features. The good news is that you now know how to get and keep the subtitles.

message 15: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) That’s crazy that I can’t use the arrows to go over to the Netflix menu that is under the episode I am going to watch. I use the arrows to change the episodes or season (if it’s a show with more than one season).

So what if I am using a Roku device? I can only “arrow” over to change selections. So I am going to test this out....

message 16: by Isa (new)

Isa Briarwood I just finished episode 1 of Dark based on all your comments, and so far I'm intrigued. I'm enjoying all the recommendations you guys have given. Although I watched Synchronicity on Netflix yesterday and wasn't thrilled with it. It left me confused and I wasn't drawn in by the characters.

message 17: by Jennifer (last edited Dec 24, 2017 07:23PM) (new)

Jennifer | 185 comments I finished Dark. It is freaking awesome. I will wait to share details, or is it ok if I put in spoiler tags? There are lots of questions...we have some answers, but man.... (view spoiler) is not where I thought we were going. I loved all the (view spoiler)

message 18: by Isa (new)

Isa Briarwood I promise not to read your comments until after I finish Dark!

message 19: by Isa (new)

Isa Briarwood I finally finished all the episodes of Dark on Netflix. I loved it and much preferred the German with English subtitles over the dubbed version. It got confusing, trying to keep all the characters straight when we often had a young and an older version of each character. I thought it ended perfectly, but now I'm frustrated that I have to wait for season 2 to come out, whenever that might be.

message 20: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) I know! The wait is torture. They did a good job with the photos though to help people keep track if you get lost on who’s who.

message 21: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 185 comments I loved that we got to see all the characters as younger and older. I think they did a good job matching the actors. The Ulrich's were amazing.

Yes, I noticed that too. They did a great job.

message 23: by Isa (new)

Isa Briarwood I agree. I thought they did a great job matching a lot of the characters with their younger selves. It was actually helpful that they would show the photos repeatedly side by side so you could get it in your head who was who.

message 24: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) I thought there was a thread for this show....season two this Friday..

Aaaahhhhh...I can’t wait! Not sure when I’ll get to it.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments I finished season one, found it super confusing at first, but once I knew who was who, I am super into it.

Wasn’t it good? I liked figuring out who the people in the past are in the present.

message 30: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 185 comments I need to get back to season 2. T

Nancy (paper_addict) Jennifer wrote: "I need to get back to season 2. T"

Me too.

message 32: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) I finally got to watch season 2. Mind blown.....

Good thing season 3 is supposed to be released on June 27th.

Some weird stuff going on like (view spoiler) I was not expecting that. I wasn’t expecting the ending either .

message 33: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) Anyone start season 3 yet?

On episode 2. It’s even more trippy than the first two seasons! Good thing they give you lots of clues so you know when and where.
