Heavy on the old school cold war/post Vietnam feel at the beginning. It's like a history lesson!
I've read this twice, but don't have a copy right now. I remember what you are pointing out, though, Matthew and it's one of the things I liked so much. I really love when a novel puts me back in the "feel" of a time from my youth. Or even a time before I was born. When it is so steeped in the culture of the time that you can almost feel and remember it, even if you weren't there. It's the same way I feel about really old sci-fi. Super nostalgic despite the fact that it was futuristic when it was actually written.
Strangely, despite the pulse of the nation and the methods being different, Black Sunday is even scarier today considering what we see going on in the world.
