Eighteen-year-old Jacob Hunt is an extremely intelligent young man who happens to have Asperger's syndrome. Although highly-functioning, Jacob is socially inept, unable to make eye contact, and unable to understand emotion. Throughout his life he has had obsessions - dogs and dinosaurs - but his new focus is forensics. With his police scanner, Jacob knows where the latest crime scene is and he will often show up to give the cops advice, usually perfect advice. Now a horrific murder has taken place and this time Jacob is on the other side of the law. He is accused of the killing of a young woman who was his socialization tutor and friend.
Theo is Jacob's 15-year-old brother and feels that he has always taken second place to his needy older brother. He both loves and resents Jacob and feels AS has singled him out at school as the brother of the weirdo. Emma is the boys' single mother, husband Henry having left the family when Theo was just a few months old. Henry could not deal with Jacob's AS nor with Emma's constant attention to their special son. Emma knows that a trial will be torture for Jacob but what she does not know for sure - is he guilty?
I enjoyed the mystery of this novel, never quite knowing the truth although Jacob never lied. My heart went out to all 3 of the family members, maybe most of all to Theo who teetered on the edge of neglect. The story seemed to be well researched and informative but I felt it was just a bit too long and drawn out.
