Fingersmith discussion

I haven't finished the book yet. I'm still at the beginning of Part 3, so please don't spoil it for me. I'm confused. Can someone please explain why Maud and Lilly's identities were switched? Like why did Maud live Sue's life and Sue lived Maud's, when Mrs. Sucksby revealed it to Maud? Why didn't they let Maud know the truth of what really happened to her mother? Also, why did Mr. Rivers marry Maud, when, when it is Sue who is the daughter of Marianne Lilly, who has the fortune?

Not sure if you've finished yet but you find all of that out at the very end. IMO, while I enjoyed reading this book I felt that there were too many "twists" that cause the plot to be confusing (I had the same questions as you when I read it).
