Play Book Tag discussion

It is the late 19th century. Elizabeth Philpot, a spinster, moves to Lyme Regis, on the coast of England, where she discovers a passion for hunting fossils. She also meets Mary Anning, a young girl with the same passion - and a great talent for it to boot. The story spans many years, following the friendship between the two ladies, and the scientific discoveries made by Mary, highlighting the struggles of being a woman in those times.

This story was bloody amazing. I learned so much, about paleontology and its birth, but also about the struggles of women in general. And of science versus religion.

I also have to mention that I always greatly admire authors who are able to differentiate characters by how they speak and think. Here, the point of view in the chapters alternated between Mary and Elizabeth, and the text was actually written differently depending on who the character was. You could open the book at random, and you didn’t need a name to know whose chapter it was. I’m always amazed when authors are able to do this, make their character’s personalities so apparent on paper!

And Mary saying ichie and plesie absolutely charmed me!

Ha! That is a good way to describe a book! :-) Tracy Chevalier is a really good author; so glad you enjoyed this one.

I read this novel during 2015, gave it 3 star rating but didn't write a review. 😕 I have a feeling if I read it now, I actually might enjoy it more. Perhaps I just wasn't in the proper mood to be receptive to the story during that time period.

I remember really enjoying this one, as well! I gave it either 3.5 stars (good) or 4 stars.

Hopefully before the end of this month, I'll also be reading The Fossil Hunter: Dinosaurs, Evolution, and the Woman Whose Discoveries Changed the World, as well. If I'm remembering correctly, someone may have recommended it to me after I read "Remarkable Creatures".

I really like this as well, though I seem to remember that I thought the love triangle was overdone.

But maybe I'm thinking of a different book ....
