500 Great Books By Women discussion

I've recently been involved with other groups centered around reading challenges, and I thought it would be nice to find a challenge that would fit this group. Lo and behold, the Reading Women Podcast (https://www.readingwomenpodcast.com/r...) has set up a very nice list of fitting challenges, which can be seen below:



I'll be making individual boards for each of these topics so that people may discuss potential works. Participants are also welcome to create a discussion board in this folder for purposes of planning and tracking their progress.

The fun begins January 1st, 2018, and ends Dec 31st, 2018, but feel free to start planning now!

PSA: let me know if it's too difficult to read any of those challenge items. I'll go ahead and type them out.

Having one thread per challenge might be too cumbersome. Might be easier for each person to set up their own challenge thread here and go from there.

This is great, Aubrey! I like their categories. I see Brina's point, and I think you said we can set up our own threads, but I also think it will be fun to compare our different choices for a category on one thread.

I'm going to try this but will try to take as much from my tbr as possible and overlap with challenges in other groups.

Aubrey - thanks. this is excellent and will give me a fresh way of tackling different reads, but still focused on women authors. I like the idea of different threads for each challenge, a la Book Riot's group. It's really helpful when you get stuck and need suggestions, and, on the other side, those of us with a passion for certain tasks can help readers stay positive when they are stuck.

I didn't know about the podcast before and just started listening yesterday for a couple of episodes. I might just find a new favorite :)

FYI, The challenge task list is blocked from copying at the Read Women website and e-newsletter (if you're a subscriber), so I typed it (with minor reductions) and it's at my thread, linked below, from which everyone should be able to copy and paste into your own threads, at your option. (I hate to see anyone else have to retype 26 tasks.)

What's everyone planning on reading first? I'm thinking A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for myself.

I'm starting with The Doctor's Wife by Sawako Ariyoshi. It counts for several tasks (in translation, takes place in Japan, classic) so I'll decide later which to use it for. I'm only 25 or so pages in but enjoying it so far.

Yep. Just finished ATGIB. I was surprised by the vividness of the characters. The females were amazing but I felt the men were very dull.

Ha ha, to my shame, despite my intentions, I haven't actually gotten around to reading this yet. I'm glad to hear that the women characters are good, as that's always something I look out for in literature.

Welcome, Elizabeth, and I don't see why not. Thank you for the link. I'll try to find some time in the next few weeks to set up boards so people can start to plan.
