Bryson slid off his shoe and pulled out a small folded piece of paper, he flashed the map and stared walking left leaving Alex to catch up "I don't know if it's going to be what you were expecting"
Alexandra followed quickly behind him, reaching his side and matching her pace with his. "Anything is better than in there..." she said
"Don't jinx yourself, it so been outside the city and it's not pretty" he said simply. The followed the tracks cockroaches scattering at their feet
Alexandra shrugged, "At least I won't be walled in, you know?" she never even experienced the outside world. What world she had inside had been taken from her
He nodded, "this system is messed, my mom got thrown in the pound 5 years ago" he said, his face returning back to stone "but you've been I. There your hole life so I guess I shouldn't act like I understand
Bryson frowned "usually no knew allowed to leave, that is really strange" he thought for a moment, the tunnel darkened the deeper they went, the ceiling creaking, and their step echoing at the slightest motion
Alexandra shrugged, "It was a few years ago. I don't know why, and I don't know where they took her. No one has heard of her since." she bit her lip
He nodded slowly "I'm sorry" was all he could think to say, after an hour of walking, after turns and turns finally they saw the light at the end of the tunnel
She shrugged, "There's a reason I don't like you guys. It's not sheer, blind hatred. There's a method to my maddness."
Bryson didn't speak, he didn't know what he could say but once they broke into the open air, the abandoned part of the city he didn't need words. The crumbling skyscrapers shimmered, the roads covered in weeds, broken down cars lying discarded in the empty streets, silence surrounding them
Alexandra's mouth dropped open as she stared at this new place. These buildings she had never before seen the likes of, while crumbling, appeared gorgeous in her eyes
He smiled at her face, it was a look of awe and wonder "wow I didn't know you'd be so happy to see a pile of junk" he teased, starring at the girl with the fiery red hair
"Wanna see something even better?" He asked a sweet smile on his face. He started for a smaller building, less extravagant and far more broken.
"Um, yes!" she said, as if it shouldn't even be a question. She followed along after him, looking at everuthing
Inside the building were fallen wooden beams, Bryson ducked and maneuvering around them with ease "were almost there"
Finally they broke free into a shimmering ball room, the ceiling was covered in a portrait of the sunrise clashing with night fall. The wooden floors were dust covered but it was easy to see that they were once elegant. "So" he said, a satisfied smile on his face "what do you think?"
She looked around, her eyes wide. These were things she had only before drempt of...She spun slowly in a circle, as if she were dancing. "It's amazing" she breathed
He laughed "everyone I know is too scared to come out here, I know every building g for the next 5 blocks" he said proudly "but no ones ever been here with me
She turned to him smiling in wonder, "Thank you, thank you so much!" she dragged her feet across the ground, leaving little swirls in the layers of dust
He laughed "there's nothing like this in the empire either, the master blew up the nicest buildings and replaced them with his own keeper headquarters"
"He's a cruel asshat." ALexandra said, upon the Master's name. She hated the man, completely despised him
He nodded in agreement "I don't know what idiot put him in charge, you know he's never even shown his face to the public, not in person anyway just on TVs and on the radio" he said kicking a piece of rubble "he's a coward"
"That's really suspicious, plus my entire family has always been keepers if I just leave and never show my face again... I can't risk him coming after my family" he said sitting down on a piece of the caved in ceiling
She sighed, "True. You should get them out. Bring them here, anywhere really. Or we could kill him...overthrow them empire"
He raised his eyebrows "you've been In the pound so you have no idea the numbers he has, if you think we can round up the town folks and rebel we'll all die, he has an army and we have a bunch of farmers with pitch forks"
"We have more than just pitchforks" she admitted, "Some of the people they threw in there are Very clever. We've built many devices"
She shrugged, a smirk slipping over her full lips. "Perhaps, perhaps more" she was quite close with some of the better developers, who kept their work very hush hush
Bryson rubbed his neck "okay fine, but no one in the pounds knows how to fight, the keepers all have to take 5 years of combat training"
Bryson laughed "sorry but we've got to face the truth here, in a war we would loose, it's best not to start something we can't win"
"Then why not just run? If you want to free everyone in the Pound, where do you plan on putting?"
Bryson frowned, narrowing his eyes slightly "there's more than one city you, granted they aren't like the empire but big enough to hold thousands, millions. The one problem is if the master is still running things it might be hard to sneak a few thousand people out.
Alexandra thought about it for a moment, leaning against one of the walls. "Well, they don't exactly strictly monitor the number of people in the Pound...There's many more people in there than most think. SO we could easily get a few out before anyone noticed" her mind was racing through ways to help the others escape
"Sure a few, but how do we pick who goes, and If people find out about it they'll start leaving too and then the guards will start to wonder why there are only six people in the streets"
"The children. Those born in the Pound and stuck there without a choice" Alexandra replied. "Those old enough to walk on their own, who don't need to feed from their mothers"
A wave of sadness flushed over Bryson. "You're right" he said nodding in agreement "but we are gonna need a war first, a distraction, and a big enough to get half the guards off the wall"
"Can you orcastrate something like that?" Alexandra asked, "I mean, I could help. Or at least I would try. I 'd do whatever needs to be done." She smiled over at him, chewing on her lower lip as she did so, one of her worst habits
He shrugged, "the rebels could, they have spies everywhere but I do know I few keepers that do tv exactly like their jobs either" he said rubbing his neck
Alexandra sighed, sliding towards the dirty floor. There was too much. They couldn't do this, they couldn't help everyone escape. As he'd said, the Master had thousands of soldiers...Nothing like he people in the Pound. They could fight, but not like that.
"Come on" Bryson said, forcing a small smile, he could see he was upsetting her. "I want to show you one more thing" he started for a elegant staircase at the end of the ball room and started to climb up them
