He is very arrogant !

He loved Gilberte so much and almost died for losing her, but he insisted in not going to see her.

Their love is a dilemma, for if Marcel goes back to see Gilberte, he would lose his credibility and dignity as well in front of Gilberte, as a result he will lose her; if he does not go back to see her, he will lose her anyway.
