A story of friendship pushed to the brink, science gone horribly wrong, and what it means to be human.

That’s since I started this in October, mind you. I haven’t gotten very far.
Ooh, interesting. Don't worry about your small word count, you're working on multiple stories, some have to take priority.
Monsters.
Greyson and Susan know what their purpose is. Created out of almost nothing by the madman Andrew Reames, they exist only to guard the secret laboratory where the professor lives. It's their greatest dream to escape, but they both know that the outside world would not take kindly to them...
Freaks.
Susan could almost pass for normal; her modifications are psychological, rather than physical. Grey, on the other hand, would never be mistaken for an average human--and that's exactly what the professor intended.
Abominations.
When a catastrophic event leaves them bereft and far away from their home, Susan and Grey must find a way to survive in a world that they were never supposed to experience.

Deleted parts of it, so it's down to 306 words. :(
The first paragraph:
"For the first time in a year, the professor is giving me free reign of our house. Usually, I’m kept a secret, locked away in a basement crypt. But he is going away for three months, and he knows I’ll be more than able to frighten any burglars. If he had made me with the ability to speak, I would tell him that nobody wants to break into a haunted house in the first place. The high towers, peeling paint, and ragged yellow lawn are enough to drive the toughest assailant away, even before they see my sibling and me.
But I was not designed with a voice. So I can only listen gravely as the professor gives us our instructions."
