Joanna | 3 comments Hey guys!

So this is a very long shot indeed, but I recently remembered a book I read as a kid that I just can't remember the title of.

Here's what I seem to remember:

- it's set in a village or small town, possibly near the sea?
- the main character is a girl
- some kind of cold spell sets in and everything begins to ice over
- it gradually becomes apparent that the ice is not natural, that it is either alive or caused by some kind of spell, I can't remember
- the girl is staying with some relative, maybe an aunt?
- she sets out to save the town/village from the ice and is able to do so thanks to some kind of power that runs in her family (I think)
- the cover of the edition I had was blue
- it was published over 10 years ago
- I think the author is a woman??

Ring any bells?

Kelly (khek) | 270 comments It sounds like Nancy Garden's Fours Crossing trilogy:
Fours Crossing
Watersmeet
The Place Between

Set in New Hampshire, with lots of snow. There's a mysterious hermit, secrets kept by people in this small town, a strange plate (or maybe a bowl?) that seems to be connected with the weather magic, and two kids around 14--a girl who comes to stay with her aunt and a boy who's lived there all his life--who are connected with the history//mythology of the town.

Joanna | 3 comments Hmmm, I'm nor sure. I don't think that's it somehow, don't remember anything about the hermit or the plate...

It actually sounds more like the second book, Watersmeet. The hermit is more of a background element and no plate. There is creeping ice though, caused by a spell by a woman named Rhiannon. Both kids have powers that run in their families..and it may be that they end up related?

Joanna | 3 comments I've found the book I was looking for. It was Winterbringers by Gill Arbuthnott. Turns out it was a boy who was visiting, and the girl lived there. It also includes a mysterious 18th century journal that I had completely forgotten - weird how our memory warps things!
