Fantasy Buddy Reads discussion

This is a Buddy Read for Wrath by John Gwynne starting November 5, 2018.

I'm in on this one. I can't make the buddy read this month and with my schedule, this looks doable.

I liked the book :)

Started - In through a few chapters. The character recap in the front of the book, though overwhelming, was certainly helpful!

Storm got a powerup. I want to see him eat a Kadoshim now.

Jael got a long overdue comeuppance.

I just have some pet peeves - I wish people stop dramatically posing over their enemies. If you are going to kill them, stab them. Stop this flashy shit. Its frustrating.

Fidele has cotton wool for brains. First time she went for a walk in the middle of a battle, Lykos got her. I have no idea why she went.

Second time, she thinks its a good idea to go after her evil warlord son with a handful of guards. In hostile territory. Seriously?

Also does anyone else think Lykos doesn't really give a shit about the larger picture and would be perfectly happy just to have Fidele? The man is obsessed.

I wonder how Nathair reconciles that the only reason Lykos could marry his mother was because of Calidas? (hide spoiler)]

I wonder, if they want to actually come back to the world, doesn't Corban's aim of destroying the Starstone treasures directly contradict that? The ending is going to be screwy (hide spoiler)]

I'm starting this today!

Up to chapter 30. This series certainly is action packed and this book is not an exception at almost a third of the way in. The body count is ridiculous actually and the morbid side of me wants to go back to the first book and tally by character. Gimli and Legolas would approve.

Really liked it, excellent pacing, but (view spoiler)[ The ending was bloody as hell, Fidele probably has the single most frustrating character story ever written, and I was right about the Ben Elim. They are here to stay and I bet they will be trouble (hide spoiler)]

Agreed and agreed. I'm only three chapters in now, but by how quickly you guys have gone through it, I'm expecting it to be a good finale!

Started. Enjoying the story so far and I like seeing some characters get their comeuppance.

Finished today. Overall I enjoyed it and the series, but not sure where it ranks in my all-time fantasy series rankings.

(view spoiler)[Part of me feels like Gwynne introduced so many characters for us to connect with just so he could have enough to reasonably kill off to the point where the key ones made it through. Agreed on the whole Fidele going off to find Nathair without telling Manquin plot was pretty weak, though Maquin didn' really feel like someone who was going to "live happily ever after". I felt like the author had recently rewatched Last of the Mohicans for those who have seen that. Just felt like if he really wanted Maquin to go berzerk for revenge, it might have been more poignant within the realm of the final battle (hide spoiler)]

FIDELE. Why. I honestly couldn't buy it when she went after Nathair. Of course, he's her son so I imagined her doing something...but she was never described as an idiot by other characters. It just seemed way out of character when she went after him like that. (hide spoiler)]

A Time Of Dread has been out for a while and the next one is coming out 4/18. A Time Of Blood

OR - I wouldn't be opposed to waiting a year or two (if its 4 books like the first) until it is complete and then read it all at once.
