Christy Stewart (christyleighstewart) Familiar Scars by Christy Leigh Stewart

Excerpt from Chapter 1

If not for Rosalyn, Orabella would have let herself die on the river shore, bleeding profusely from her neck, but Rosalyn was there, hardly maimed but utterly terrified. She would have survived if she could pull herself together, but she was too terrified, so Orabella pulled herself up and to the girl to comfort her, doing what little she could as she slowly died. Only, she didn’t die. Neither one did.

The boy wasn’t so lucky though. Orabella had crashed into the water beside him, moments after he had. Their wounds were similar but his was so much worse, too much for Orabella to comprehend. Instead of a slashed neck she saw just another mouth, the one from his neck screaming at her, vomiting blood. He must have been in shock, because he didn’t seem to pay it any mind as he stared at Orabella examining her own second mouth that must have been screaming just as loudly at him, only hers was curled in a grin. He seemed so calm though his eyes shone with desperation that

Orabella had reached for him, but it was too late. He couldn’t help her, and that had been the last time she had ever reached for help on anyone’s behalf, save Rosalyn.
