Remember these are spoilery discussions - so stay away unless you've finished this section! Also, please keep spoilers to the things we know in this section of the book.

I split The Great Hunt into four sections to roughly correspond with weeks of February. I'm posting these a couple weeks early for those who are ahead of the one book per month schedule :)

What are your thoughts on this section of The Great Hunt?

Need a reminder? Here are the chapter summaries.

My favorite chapter: I definitely can't pick a chapter out of this section, but I would say the chapters taking place in the portal world are my favorites! It's a glimpse into a very interesting world, and we definitely only touch the surface of it. Also Selene.... She's an interesting (and mysterious) character!

Happy reading!

Shannon (That's So Poe) (thatssopoe) | 37 comments The portal world is terrifying in a Stephen King sort of way - everything is just off. The lack of life there is so creepy. And then Selene appears and Rand, Hurin, and Loial all just accept that at face value?!? Admittedly, Selene seems to completely overwhelm logic when she's around, so maybe it's not their fault for not questioning things.

As a side note, Hurin is such a fun character. He and Loial are both so likable, which made this section of the book really enjoyable despite the creepiness of the portal world.

Benjamin Meadows | 5 comments It definitely is a terrifying place! It was interesting how Rand wanted to press on, but how Selene insisted on leaving. To me, it was almost as if she wanted to throw Rand off the path. I guess you can’t blame her with the Grolm coming. This is my first read through the series, so I have no idea what to expect. At this point I’m really suspicious of Selene - especially after the Nine Rings!

I’m also really digging the Aes Sedai chapters. The different Ajahs and what they stand for is so fascinating. Especially knowing that some are dark friends from the prologue. But who?!

Shannon (That's So Poe) (thatssopoe) | 37 comments The different Ajahs is such a neat concept. I'm in the third book right now and they have introduced a little more about each colored Ajah piece by piece. It's fun to see our knowledge of the world flesh out as the books progress. There definitely is a feeling of a mystery novel about this series as well since you're always wondering who might be a darkfriend. Robert Jordan definitely knows how to make a book gripping!

The portal worlds are super interesting to me! I agree that they should have been a bit more suspicious of Selene but I also don't think that it's completely their fault... There is definitely more to Selene than meets the eye.

I think all of these little mysteries are what make rereading the series so fun and why so many people end up reading all or part of this series more than once! I love the rereadability of the series - yup, i just made up that word haha.

Mo (weneed_mobrown) I have such weird feelings about Selene. She knows way too much about the portal worlds for "accidentally" ending up in it! And she's so calm in other dangerous situations with creatures wanting to kill them but she's screaming when faced with the first Grolm? Suspicious... I think she was supposed to be left in the portal world and they shouldn't have taken her back to the real one. Plus he keeps commenting on her smell and looks and getting distracted so she's definitely doing something sketchy there. She also seems to have a HUGE effect on Rand being able to touch saidin, and she knows too much! Ugh, I just get the willys when I read about her!.

As for Rand complaining about his clothes and status. I definitely think it was forced on him but the Aes Sedai! They told him he was the Dragon Reborn, gave him the banner, changed all his clothes to fancy ones, and told Ingtar that he should be second in command. The meeting Rand had with the Amyrlin, Moiraine, and the Brown Aes Sedai was left pretty cryptic at the end so I think they decided to push him into his title since they'll need him to battle in the end. Which could work or it couldn't depending on how he deals with the new status.

I'm really enjoying the Tar Valon lessons and watching Neyvene grapple with becoming and Aes Sedai. I'm curious as to how she'll finally manage to control her temper!

Also on the topic of Aes Sedai, I don't think a Red would be a Darkfriend. They deeply feel that men are bad so it doesn't make sense as to why they would want to be in a camp with people using Saidin. I don't know enough about the different colors yet to make a guess as to what other color might have Darkfriends. I definitely don't think we've met the Aes Sedai that were in the prologue though.

I definitely agree! Someone wrote in another week's topic, though I can't find it now, that these books are kind of like mysteries because you are always guessing motives and outcomes of characters.

I love hearing your suspicions of Selene Mo - she's definitely a suspicious character but we don't know much at this point of the book (I know you've read on though ;) ). While many people in this world associate Saidin with Dark Friends, that's not really true. Anyone can be a dark friend in this world, which makes the guessing all the more fun.

Yay Kevin, glad you've enjoyed it so far!
