Catherine Hawthorn (catherinehawthorn) I've been picking up working on one of my old WIPs, recently retitled From the Cave. I'll leave this blog post link about it, if you guys want to learn more about it:

Fun! I love picking up old stories, because it saves you the trouble of having to come up with the characters and the plot ;P

Random question: Is the title by any chance inspired by Plato's Allegory of the Cave?

message 6: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Hawthorn (catherinehawthorn) good question! I've read the Allegory of the Cave, and there may be one or two parallels, but the work isn't based on that.

it's more of a metaphor: my theme has to do with the good and bad effects of technology in a fantasy setting. There are a few actual caves in the story too

Ok, interesting! That was just the first thing I thought of when I saw the title, so I thought I'd ask :)

Catherine Hawthorn (catherinehawthorn) that's good to know! in case this thing ever goes to print that is...

Catherine Hawthorn (catherinehawthorn) This is an old snippet that I wrote as the beginning scene. Could you guys please critique the online messaging parts? Was my Text Talk (TXTTLK) accurate?? I tend to write in complete sentences when I IM or text. (So does my character Maeve apparently).

It starts off with an IM from Maeve:

Is she being swallowed into oblivion, or is she on the very crest of her teenage existence?

Gail laughed at her best friend's latest IM. She typed a reply to the beat of LynchPin:

She should stop writin books & help her BFF find somethin 2 wear on Friday.

Gail settled back into her hard desk chair as her music app switched to another song. Soon, her mind was far away thinking about Jeremy Black, her boyfriend-of-two-days. That is, until another ding announced the arrival of another message from Maeve.

Are you going out with that creep Black again?!

Gail's eyes flashed as her fingers went staccato over the keys.

Duh, I'm goin out w/ him! And y not? What u got against him?

Gail glared at her BFF’s profile picture. How could anyone NOT like a coal-black haired and icy blue-eyed star running back!

He insulted The LORD OF THE RINGS! He's not a keeper, bestie!

Gail had to roll her eyes. Why couldn't Maeve understand that not everyone had to be obsessed with stupid fantasy novels about elves and fairies, and all that globbety-gook!

Whatev. I'm lucky just 2 get a date w/ him! Which reminds me, turquoise mini-dress or hot pink capris?

Gail should have expected the next message.

Wear both.

Nicki Chapelway | 2171 comments It looks great (though she really does need to break up with the guy who insulted LoTR just sayin'...) I'm not the best person to give advice with texting though because I don't text...

Catherine Hawthorn (catherinehawthorn) that's okay, Nicki!

HAHA, I happen to agree with you and Maeve on that one. I've tried telling her that but being the rebellious 18yearold she is, she won't listen, of course....

Catherine Hawthorn (catherinehawthorn) Wow, it has been a year since I wrote in here......

I haven't been working on this WIP that much (I've actually been working on the prequel!) but I did work a bit on it during July.

Sooooo, I'm going to put in some blog posts that will tell you more about the WIP, if you're interested:
