ALL about UNO:
All about the UNO Team Challenge

About this team challenge:

โ—ˆ This is a 3 month team challenge starting /b>1 February 2018

โ—ˆ At the end of the challenge 30 April 2018 the team with the most points wins!

โ—ˆ At the start of each month each team is given a minimum 13 hands of 7 "UNO" cards

โ—ˆ The idea is to "play" each hand for points. It is up to the team how many "hands" they can get through in the month, but they must play one hand completely before being able to get points for the next

โ—ˆ The team can choose to skip an entire hand to get to the next one, but they are not given a replacement hand. (You can only skip one hand in a month)

UNO Cards
From Wikipedia
The deck consists of 108 cards, of which there are twenty-five of each color (red, green, blue, and yellow), each color having two of each rank except zero. The ranks in each color are zero to nine, "Skip", "Draw Two" and "Reverse" (the last three of these being classified as "action cards"). In addition, the deck contains four each of "Wild" and "Wild Draw Four" cards.

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments IMPORTANT

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday 1, 2016 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this COUNTDOWN.

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Children's book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour by using this COLOUR TOOL. If in doubt, ask me or She who must not be named as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion.

* Bearing in mind that some of us are more competitive than others, of course we'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments Hi Everyone! My name is Kadi and I'm your captain! This is my second year taking part in the UNO challenge, last year I was a co-captain and my team came like 7th place or something. I guess we should just start by introducing ourselves, what kind of books we like and what our top 3 books of 2017 were.
Personally, I love pretty much all fiction books. When it comes to YA I'm not a big fan of all of them especially if they are cliche. My fave 3 genres would be mystery, time-travel and apocalypse style books.
My top 3 books of 2017 were:
Here Lies Daniel Tate by Cristin Terrill Ready Player One (Ready Player One, #1) by Ernest Cline Running Girl (Garvie Smith Mystery, #1) by Simon Mason

Stephanie (stephreadsnnc) | 183 comments Hello!! My name is Stephanie, and this is my first time doing the UNO challenge. Iโ€™m from North Carolina and I have 2 children. When there is free time to be found I am reading most of the time, most of the books I read come from the local library, so I have to have a bit of time for the books to come in from out of town sometimes. My genres usually tend to be Urban Fantasy, Paranormal, and some YA and NA. My top 3 books read of 2017, tricky question because I enjoyed a lot of the books I read. If put on the spot to re-read 3 books by the end of the week I would choose:
The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich The Edge of Never, The Edge of Always Two Book Collection (The Edge of Never, #1-2) by J.A. Redmerski Blood Rights (House of Comarrรฉ, #1) by Kristen Painter

Iโ€™m open to new genres and am looking forward to start this challenge.

Hey Stephanie! Is it ok if I call you Steph? Your name is long and I am lazy hahah. Also thanks very much for adding links to your profile and bookshelf that is really helpful. Paranormal books are pretty cool I've read some paranormal horrors and reading them in the dark is definitely creepy

Varsha (varsha18) | 134 comments HI,
I am Varsha. This is the first time that I am participating in the UNO Challenge. Love the concept. I read most genres of books except horrors......3 of my most loved books from 2017 would be:
Wonder by R.J. Palacio The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Liz Baylus (liz_baylus) Good morning everyone. Iโ€™m on mobile so not sure how to do links or anything like that, but I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Liz and Iโ€™m a SAHM to my first little boy born in 2017. Last year was (understandably) a little on the hectic side so I didnโ€™t read nearly as much as I normally do. My favorite genre is mystery, though I didnโ€™t read any in 2017 that really stuck out to me.

Hi Liz! Mobile GR basically sucks I get you. I love mystery too! And can I just say your little boy is so cute!! I could just eat him he looks so adorable. And don't worry about the amount of reading you gotta do. The good thing about this challenge is that you don't have to read a ton but it's a very good way of motivating you to read more! I'm going to wait for the rest of the team to introduce themselves before I talk about the cards of the month and the tracking spreadsheet I'm in the process of making

Hi Varsha! You're going to love this challenge trust me! It's a great way to read all those books that you've had on your to-read list forever. I've read Wonder! It was a cute book. Not really one of my favourites but it was cute.

Teresa (teresainohio) I am so excited to be here, i LOVE uno and in our house we get quite competitive with it, i use to solely read mysteries, but after a looooooooooooooong book slump, I found YA since my daughter likes me to preview her books, and I have read some steam punk books I love the fashions but the books I have read all seem to dabble in paranormal. I do read paranormal too.

I usually have 2 or 3 or more books going at one time. I read at least 2 a week, some days you will see me a lot, but on days I start at 4 am you wont see much of me.

and a bubble bath is the perfect reason to read

My top three of 2017
Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas Collecting the Dead (Special Tracking Unit #1) by Spencer Kope Loving vs. Virginia A Documentary Novel of the Landmark Civil Rights Case by Patricia Hruby Powell

message 18: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) question when we finish a book should we make a post where the book fits all the tasks, or do you want us to just find a spot in the database. when I am on my phone I cant always access the spreadsheet

and I sent friend requests to everyone

Colleen | 293 comments Hi! Glad to be on a team and ready to go - this is my first year participating. I like ALL books and can read anything usually (although romance isn't at the top of my list). I usually have 2 books going - one to read and one to listen to which has really upped my yearly book count read.

3 Favorites in 2017:
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption
Ordinary Grace
The Husband's Secret

(LOVED Ready Player One and want to see the movie. The Sun is Also a Star & Salt to the Sea are on my TBR.)

I'm in Minnesota, have 3 kids and utilize the library and used book sales for all my bookish needs. I'm in 3(!) real life book clubs so have to juggle getting it all in for sure. Looking forward to reading with you all!

I will also need explaining on how to track books read/hands so just let me know what I need to do! Do we just track them on our Uno read shelf?

I'm very excited to see how this goes! I like to read books from any and every genre.
My top books of 2017 were:
A Clockwork Orange By Anthony Burgess
Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer By Rick Riordan
The Female of the Species By Mindi McGinnis

- Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead
- Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

I am more of mystery, thriller and historical fiction fan. Slowly planting my feet into non-fics and biographies too.

How does this challenge work? Do all of us read individually and then hope to surpass other teams, or do we synchronize and wait for our Captains and Co-captain for some instructions?

If you're on your phone and can't use the tracking spreadsheet (which I'm working on making and will upload here when it's ready) you can just send all the info on here like the name of the book and all the card it applies for. Either me or she who must not be named (out co-captain) will enter it onto the tracking spreadsheet

Hi Colleen! Great to have you on the team! The challenge is a great time to read a lot of books you normally wouldn't read or have been on your to-read list for a while.

Hi Komal! Don't worry we have a lot of first timers here and you'll soon get the hang of it.

Basically our strategy as a team is to read whichever books we would like to read individually and apply them to cards. As the month begins to end things get more interesting as we may have to read for specific cards in order to finish the entire 13 hands but don't worry the greatest part is the rush at the end of the month!

Once you have finished a book you can log it into our tracking spreadsheet (which I'm making now) and she who must not be named and I will use that spreadsheet in order to see which book can apply to which card. Me and my co-captain shall handle the official team spreadsheet that will count our points and everyone will be able to access and edit the tracking spreadsheet in order to enter what book they have read and which cards they apply to. Alternatively you can just message on this chat when you have finished a book saying which book you have read and which card it applies to and how and me or she who must not be named will enter it onto the tracking spreadsheet for you.
Check this out in order to understand how the cards and everything works: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Sounds good and friendly! :)
On that note, I'd also suggest that we can have a "suggested-reading" sheet in the spreadsheet which can list down all applicable books from various genre, e.g., following books can be read for 1 (one) card:

1 (One)
Read a book that:

- has a 1 or One in the title
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Theory of the Four Movements

- has a title starting with O
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

- has an author first name or surname starts with O
The Dark Ages

- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with O

- is set in a place name starting with O
The Turtle of Oman
Oman a History

- is book 1 in a series
Collecting the Dead
The Lightning Thief
City of Bones

Does listening to audio book count for this challenge?

I get my books from the library, and if a book is going to fit for a card, I want to wait to read it until start date and if I need to order books I can get them in 3 to five day

It wasnโ€™t one I would have chosen myself and it really surprised me by how good it was. When it makes me laugh cry and think about and remember it later it makes the top reads list.

I read Ready Player One before it got all the hype and it was my start of giving fantasy books a chance. I loved it!! It was so well written. His second book is also pretty good if you havenโ€™t read it already.

Alissa | 324 comments Question for you Kadi you are still working on another spreadsheet for tracking purposes and the one above is the one that shows us our cards for the month?

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 655 comments IMPORTANT: EVERYONE PLEASE READ

I noticed a couple of you were asking similar questions so I thought I'd just write this out to everyone.

Official Spreadsheet
The spreadsheet linked at the top of the thread is the official spreadsheet where me or our co-captain, she who must not be named, will enter the books we have read for the challenge.
This is the sheet where the hands for each month are dealt.
This spreadsheet is available for everyone to see.

Tracking Spreadsheet
I am currently in the process of making this and will soon give everyone a link so that they can access this.
The tracking spreadsheet is for everyone to edit if they would like to.
Here we will enter all the books we have read for each month, the start and end dates, the cards they apply to and how they apply. (please read this if you don't know how a card applies to a book)
From there me or our co-captain will choose which card to put your book down for.
EXAMPLE: Alissa read a book that applied to cards 3, 9 and Reverse. I then decide to put it down for card 9 on the official spreadsheet because why not.
The card your book has been put down for can change as we are allowed to move them around.
Me or the co-captain will handle this so don't stress :)
You do not have to enter the data into the tracking spreadsheet if you do not want to or are not able to at the time.
It is helpful but also optional. Instead you can write the details on the thread and me or she who must not be named will enter them for you.

Reading strategy
The way this competition works is that you'll find most books you read apply to multiple cards.
Therefore, >b
Personally, I'd say read whichever books you want to read at the beginning of the month, don't read for one particular card.
About 1/2 or 3/4 through the month we will have a small amount of cards left from our 13 hands and I will then tell you that we need people to read for these specific cards.
REMEMBER: Only books started after the challenge has begun count!

You can view them on the spreadsheet linked at the top of the thread. I tried to input a formula to the page in order to count how many of each card there was but I haven't been given access to edit it yet so when I am I will upload the cards for this month on here.

Yep! I've updated the spreadsheet linked at the top so it includes a table of all the card we have for February too

Guys the tracking spreadsheet is finally here!

Everyone should be able to edit but if that's not working for you please tell me. It's got a really handy table on the side that shows all the card we have to finish for the month and it will update itself automatically which is helpful.

I will be putting a link to the spreadsheet at the top of the thread in the very first comment I made so that it's easy for everyone to access :)
