Truly a one off. In that small band of artists that, for me, have really been a part of this thing we call life on earth. (Also includes Bowie, Cave, Lydon, Bolan, Iggy). The Fall were never my favourite band, but always there or there about. I actually decided to stop going to see them about 8 years ago because I felt I was enabling his decline. MES cut a pathetic figure towards the end - but he wouldn’t have had it any other way. I am not sure if I’ve seen The Fall more than the Bad Seeds or the other way round. Both are well into double figures. Very sad news - but inevitable. Good that he kept going right to the end. He wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Off the top of my head TOP TEN favourite songs by The Fall

New Big Prinz
Container Drivers
Kicker Conspiracy
Mr Pharmacist
Bill is Dead
My New House
Lost in Music
Bingo Masters Breakout
Blindness
Theme From Sparta FC

RIP MES
The broke the mould etc etc

OUR HEX ENDUCTION

In more grumpy cult hero news, anyone who ever listened to a Fall song or read arsey Manc genius Mark E Smith’s 2008 memoir Renegade will be aware of his fascination with all manner of wyrd stuff, occult practices and the bleed of the supernatural into mundane life. But it has only recently come to light that he co-authored a horror film. Posthumously published by the independent Strange Attractor Press, whose books take a trip from the beaten path to explore the weird and wonderful, The Otherwise: The Screenplay for a Horror Film That Never Was was co-authored with Graham Duff in 2015. The storyline features The Fall in a recording studio on Pendle Hill, a gang of satanic bikers and Jacobites who have slipped through a wormhole – ie fairly familiar fodder to Fall fans. ‘The Otherwise is a perfect book for us, at the crossroads of our love of both supernatural film and fiction, and experimental and underground music,’ said Strange Attractor publisher Mark Pilkington. ‘We can only hope that publication might help move Graham and Mark’s fantastic script from page to screen.’
