Chris Turek | 4 comments I am trying to track down a book (perhaps a series?) that was a very much in the same style/ reading level of Encylopedia Brown. The book had about 10 short mysteries where each would conclude with the question, "How did he prove it? What was the clue?" I believe the main character (a middle school boy) was constant (just like Encyclopedia).

The catch was that there was a detailed black and white page of art describing a critical scene in that mystery. You would solve the mystery by looking closely at the picture and find the details. Just a different skill the reader exercises to track down the answer. You'd then move to the end of the book to see the answer.

We read them aloud in 1980s middle school; our teacher passed out xeroxes of the critical pictures.

I'd love to find the name and track one down for my kids today.

Thanks in advance!

Chris Turek | 4 comments Unfortunately that is not the title/series I was thinking of. My book would have been published around 1980.

However, I was not aware of the Can You Solve the Mystery series before you reply. It looks terrific and I plan on giving them a try.

Thanks!

Ayshe | 4721 comments This edition: Hawkeye Collins & Amy Adams in The Secret of the Long-Lost Cousin & Other Mysteries is published 1983, that would have been too late or you just didn't notice the first published date?

Chris Turek | 4 comments Hmm. Maybe it is the correct book then. Will get a library copy to confirm

Ayshe's suggestion of the Can You Solve the Mystery series (1983 and owards) by M. Masters contains black-and-white line drawings (e.g., a detailed map, simpler drawings of scenes).

Here are some Google Book previews of a few examples:

- https://books.google.com/books?id=CEN... ("The Case of the Chocolate Snatcher: & Other Mysteries" #2)
- https://books.google.com/books?id=9sr... ("The Case of the Video Game Smugglers: Can You Solve the Mystery #3")
