Whilst I really did not enjoy the reading experience (I find magical realism hard) reflecting back on it I was really glad I did. A traumatised mother who would rather kill her child than live as slaves. The ensuing guilt, rejection and isolation she faced which led to 'Beloved' entering their lives..
Powerful book.
It's been a long time since I've read it, but I always remember the little handprints in the cakes ... yes, very powerful book.
I read Beloved two or three years ago. These were my thoughts at the time: Beloved is most unusual; it's not like most novels. In its form it is akin James Joyce's Ulysses, but unlike Ulysses, it is lyrical. Much of it is stream of consciousness - just let yourself go with the flow.
I have just finished reading this and my first response was I didn't know what to say about it. However, I do agree with all the comments above, it was a very powerful book.
