Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Don't worry too much about meeting expectations, we're all just here to have fun and read books. It is appearant that you are putting in a lot of effort to get this group started. All the rest will come eventually.

Right now I'm reading The Master and Margarita in German and I love every second of it. It's just so funny.
I'm also reading The Time Traveller's Guide to Elizabethan England for the occasional sprinkle of non-fiction.

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Wow, I dont think I ever tried Non-Fiction before... I can't remember. I know I'm maybe being a bit judgmental, but I always thought that non-fiction or biographies looked a little boring for me... I want to believe that I just didnt find the right one yet :)

If I may, I will suggest a biography that is not boring: The Author Of Himself: The Life Of Marcel Reich-Ranicki This guy grew up as a jew in Nazi Germany, was deported to Poland, found the love of his life in the Warsaw Ghetto, escaped from the Ghetto with his wife, hid from the Nazis for years, then became a secret agent for Poland, changed his career and became an editor for an East-German publisher, fled from the communist bloc and finally established himself in West Germany as one of the leading literary critics of modern Germany. Now, if that is boring, I wouldn't know what else to recommend :p
Maybe Not I Memoirs of a German Childhood by Joachim C. Fest , which I found to be profoundly edifying and inspirational. Sorry if these are very specific to Germany. But I'm just now discovering the difficulty of finding German non-fiction that has been translated to English.

I just found one that is in English originially and that I liked very much The Land of Little Rain by Mary Austin It's a beautiful narrative of the author's journeys into the Californian deserts.

I guess I better stop here, but I just realized what a fun way this is to procrastinate ...

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments February R-A-T Selfchallenge idea:
Since we're reading 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower', I thought it would be a great idea to challenge myself with reading at least two of the books Charlie reads. And to make it really interesting, they have to be books I haven't read before.

Mild SPOILER (book list)
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Hamlet by William Shakespeare The Stranger by Albert Camus Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs On the Road by Jack Kerouac The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand A Separate Peace by John Knowles Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald Walden by Henry David Thoreau

For me, about half of them is already out. I put this here, since I'm still not sure, which of these books are going to make it to my R-A-T TBR

Omg thats such a good idea. I've been meaning to reread The Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird.... I may just have to join you in this challenge

message 5: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments I'll definitely read To Kill a Mockingbird, so a buddy read discussion would be great.

Niamh Grace | 15 comments I didn’t even know that we were doing a monthly books this time haven’t been getting any notifications :(

message 8: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments I am definitely interested this time. I've already ordered Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orïsha, #1) by Tomi Adeyemi . The last few times the books weren't exactly my cup of tea.
Btw I would be interested in the 'chosing a book for each other' event, what has become of this? (I believe it would be a lot of fun to see what people think I would like to read xD)

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Hey everyone! I'm definitely going to read Children of Blood and Bone, I already have it at home! I don't know when I'll start though. Probably a bit later in the month...

I'm not going to read The hate you give though. I've read some reviews that really made me not want to pick it up. So, yeah.

message 10: by Niamh Grace (new)

Niamh Grace | 15 comments I’m on a mobile device so it could be why I am not reciving any notifications, I probably read the hate you give as a friend owns it and I can borrow it off her and I probably won’t get round to reading the other one for quite some time

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments @ Maggie: Same! I was considering it, because of all the hype and because of the mostly good reviews. But when I read a view of the negative reviews I quickly lost interest...

@ Niamh Grace: I never receive notifications on my phone... it's really annoying. I only see the notifications when I check my emails and I also not always get notifications for that. haha.......

message 12: by Niamh Grace (new)

Niamh Grace | 15 comments Yes I have read illuminae, when I started reading it I didn’t think it was going to be very good coz a friend had told me that she didn’t like it etc but i quite enjoyed it, writing format is a bit unusually but cool, plan to read the 2nd one sometime soon

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Nooo, I still haven't read it yet... shame on me.. but my excuse is that I have the first on sitting on my shelf in German and appar the German publisher takes its time. I actually sent them an email asking about the release dates and the second book will only come out in September. The third one doesn't even have a release date yet.. so there's that.
And since I like reading them close to each other, I will wait a bit longer. XD

message 14: by Niamh Grace (new)

Niamh Grace | 15 comments Might be a silly question but I can’t find the bit on how to do it, how do you attach the books your going to read with a photo and that and how to get people to vote for what u next read?

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments If you mean creating a poll, I don't know that myself..

But including the cover of a book is easy. Though for me it only works on the laptop. When you want to write a comment you find "add book/author" above the comment box. You can click on that and then it asks you whether you want to add a book or an author and down below you can chose between link and cover.
I think that's comprehensible...

Jenny when will the May readathon be? any theme plans?

message 17: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Since we're not doing any group activity next month: Would anybody be interested in buddy reading Circe with me?

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Is it necessary to read the song of Achilles first?

message 19: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments No, they aren't part of a series. The only character the books have in common is Odysseus.

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Then I'd like to read it as well!
I'll see whether I can get my hands on it tomorrow in the book store, if not I'll order it. Did you already start?

message 21: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments yes, I'm at roughly 25%, but I can wait and start on another book in the mean time [ I still have some studying to do anyway ...]

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Alright! I'll keep you updated!

message 23: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Okay, btw the bloomsbury hardcover edition is well worth the extra money.

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Circe by Madeline Miller
That's this one, right? It's absolutely stunning... Even without the dust jacket. Plus, it has a map. Which is always great. I definitely want to have this one! XD

message 25: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Yes, it's simply beautiful + it's not the cheap American pseudo-hardcover: You can tell just by looking at it that it has thread stitching.

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments The book arrived yesterday! I got to page 50 so far and will try to catch up asap.

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Hey, anybody still there?
I'm not sure if this is the proper place, but I would like to nominate The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor, #1) by Jessica Townsend as book of the month for August.

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Hey guys!

I want to apologise for being inactive lately. I had a lot going on and on top of that got into a reading slump, however, I got out of it again and am motivated! 💪

message 35: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Don't worry, I don't think anyone noticed. There was nothing going on...

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments I figured... I saw we're also not reading a book for August. Maybe we will start in September again? :)

message 37: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments I hope so, maybe this is just a summer break?

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments What a coincidence! I'm also currently on vacation (and coming back on the 19th) and I also got accepted for my new study program/ job!

Congratulations to you on that as well! 😊
Do you already know what major (I think that's how you call it) you want to do?

I am definitely interested in reading a book or two together every month! So you can put the nomination thread up as well! :)

message 39: by Lars (new)

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 56 comments Congratulations on being accepted to college!
I wouldn't mind reading some books with you either, so I'm also in favor of you putting up the nominations thread.

message 40: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Cindy (unicornprincess_54) | 20 comments Yay!! Congratulations to both of you!!!
I'm barely a Sophomore but I'm kind of starting to think about college
And I would LOVE to start doing a challenge again but I might not read as much because I have so much homework now :( But I can't wait!! XD

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments I'll be doing my master of science in Sales Management and it will be a dual programm, so I'm going to work for IBM starting in September! I'm so excited!! :D

Ah, alright! Then I probably got that mixed up.
I did an apprenticeship as a kind of secretary as well a few years back and I really liked it! :)

Vanessa (bookfairy.reads) (bookfairyreads) | 41 comments Even if we only read one book a month and do nothing at all this would be great. :) I guess most of us will be really busy soon...

message 43: by Angelica (new)

Angelica Cindy (unicornprincess_54) | 20 comments @Maggie Yeah I understand the struggle, a least reading some is better than no reading at all :)
