Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments Heart on the Line (Ladies of Harper’s Station, #2) by Karen Witemeyer

Witemeyer Returns with Her Trademark Blend of Adventure, Romance, and Humor

Grace Mallory is tired of running, of hiding. But when an old friend sends an after-hours telegraph transmission warning Grace that the man who has hunted her for nearly a year has discovered her location, she fears she has no choice. She can't let the villain she believes responsible for her father's death release his wrath in Harper's Station, the town that has sheltered her and blessed her with the dearest friends she's ever known.

Amos Bledsoe prefers bicycles to horses and private conversations over the telegraph wire to social gatherings with young ladies who see him as nothing more than an oddity. His telegraph companion, the mysterious Miss G, listens eagerly to his ramblings every night and delights him with tales all her own. For months, their friendship--dare he believe, courtship?--has fed his hope that he has finally found the woman God intended for him. Yet when he takes the next step to meet her in person, he discovers her life is in peril, and Amos must decide if he can shed the cocoon of his quiet nature to become the hero Grace requires.

message 12: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments Looks like we are going to have a great group. We will begin discussing around the 14th since this is a short month.

message 13: by Loraine (last edited Feb 15, 2018 02:26PM) (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments Discussion is now open since this is a short month. There were no discussion questions included with this book or posted on line. So this will be pretty much an open discussion. I will post one question of my own:

Karen Witemeyer is known for the humor she includes in her historical romances. What incident in Heart on the Line particularly tickled your funny bone?

message 14: by Crista (new)

Crista Crawford (goodreadscomcrista_crawford) | 13 comments I loved the description of the two older women. The feisty one reminded me exactly of my grandmother!

message 15: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments They were among my favorites too Crista, and I loved the description of the feisty one on her bicycle lesson. LOL moment!

message 16: by Crista (new)

Crista Crawford (goodreadscomcrista_crawford) | 13 comments That was my favorite. Also picturing her holding him hostage when he first came to town cracked me up. It would be nice to be that bold at her age!

message 17: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments Yes the hostage situation was definitely a giggle moment.

message 18: by Angie (new)

Angie Thompson (angiethompson) | 157 comments I loved the little nephew who liked to grab glasses. (Although I'd like it if today's glasses would bend back into shape so easily!) :D

message 19: by Crista (new)

Crista Crawford (goodreadscomcrista_crawford) | 13 comments I was thinking the same thing when I read that! One bend today, and they will snap in half. She wrote the nephew's description very well without providing a ton of detail. We then could picture him ourselves. He was a cutie.

message 20: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments That nephew reminded me so much of my grandson who also loved to grab my glasses when he was a toddler.

Who was your favorite character in the story and why?

message 21: by Charlene (new)

Charlene | 612 comments It made me giggle that Amos referred to his mom as his best sleuth. However I have to say my favourite part was chapter 4. Amos's interacting with the mule was hilarious. I loved the name "wilful" LOL. Then Amos landing In manure which remained on his clothes throughout the day including his first time to meet Grace. And then she tried not to turn her nose when she smelt him. The whole thing had me laughing out loud. I also thought Amos and aunt Henry's first introduction was also funny.

My favourite characters have to be aunt Henry because she was very funny but also because of her strength which she imparted to those around her when they felt defeated. I also really liked Amos as he was an unusual hero as he didn't have the qualities that a lot of books like to portray but yet his qualities out shone the qualities of this world. For example he was fearless in his own quirky way. He was also wise, loyal creative and protective and most importantly he was a man of faith :). In some ways he reminded me of the young version of David from the Bible when he faced Goliath.

message 22: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments I liked Amos too. He wasn't the typical "swoonworthy" hero. But his inner qualities shone through his average Joe looks.

Charlene - the mule episode really made me laugh too. Witemeyer is so good at writing humor into her stories.

message 23: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (goodreadscomamanda_hamm) | 13 comments I liked Amos as a character and was definitely amused by his arrival, both the mule and the greeting by the grandmothers.

As far as him not being swoonworthy, I feel as though I've read other books with characters (the man or the woman) who negatively compared themselves to others, and they were portrayed as simply underestimating their appeal. Here, Amos was actually average looking and we understood that wasn't what was important. I appreciated that.

message 24: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 1152 comments I'm finally diving in! The first chapter is excellent. :)

And this is totally beside the point, but the paperback is set in one of my favorite typefaces ever, so it makes it that much more fun to read!

message 25: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments I liked the typeface also when I read the paperback. It fit the style of the book for sure.

message 26: by Paula (last edited Feb 20, 2018 01:32PM) (new)

Paula Shreckhise | 238 comments I liked Helen and what goes through her head as she is taking care of Lee! Real manhater reformed! Do you want me to post my review here?

message 27: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments Why don't you post a link to your review Paula.

I loved the changes that she goes through as she takes care of Lee. She definitely learned that not all men are the same.

message 43: by Carolyn (last edited Feb 26, 2018 05:58AM) (new)

Carolyn | 225 comments The group has piqued my interest. Surprisingly, our library has book one; but, not the other novelle, and book 2; but, it's on my list to read, thanks for review. so, for anyone else interested, book 1 is at the library, novelle is here:
https://www.amazon.com/Worth-Wait-Lad... and book 3, I will have to try other sources, as not at library, here

message 44: by Loraine (new)

Loraine (librarydiva) | 4454 comments Carolyn have you asked your library if they can get it on Interlibrary Loan? I have to get a lot of my books that way.

message 45: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 1152 comments Carolyn....the first novella was ebook only. The second novella, in the Hearts Entwined collection, just came out, so it's perhaps not in the library yet.

message 46: by Carolyn (last edited Feb 27, 2018 05:45AM) (new)

Carolyn | 225 comments thanks, Lorraine, I found #1 on ebay, reasonable; and Hannah, I purchased novelle ebook; so now, I need time to get to them

message 47: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah Brown | 43 comments Helen stole the show in this one..no question. Amos and Grace...who???? I was MUCH more engaged in Helen & Lee's story. This was a different read from Witemeyer for me, it didn't have the humor I've come to enjoy from this author. Maybe I just have high expectations from this author, as I have my favorites! I felt the story rushed and the epilogue to drag. I'll hold on to my favorites from Witemeyer 😀

message 48: by Charlene (new)

Charlene | 612 comments Which books are your favourite Rebekah? So I can give them a read :)
