Sam Browning (Idontevenread) | 5 comments This book was set in England and almost everyone in the country disappears. It is from multiple points of view. There are a couple survivors that have to band together and collect resources and figure out what is going on. Once about twenty people locate each other they establish a base of operations at a farmhouse and split up duties(such as defense, supply runs, farming, nurses, cooks, etc.) I read the book on my kindle, which I have not used for about a year, and the book seems to have disappeared from my library. I am almost certain I will know the book when I see it.

Moved to Unsolved.

(Please read our group description box for tips on how to post.)

When did you read it?

message 3: by Adam (new)

Adam Coe | 8 comments Sounds like the HBO series "The Leftovers", based off of a novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta

I read it about a year ago.

No, thats not it. I do not believe it was based on a certain town in England.

Andy Phillips | 241 comments Do you mean literally disappeared? There are a couple of books that spring to mind but it's a disease that causes most people to die in both of these:
There Falls No Shadow
After The Fire

No, neither of those are it. I think everyone just disappears and the survivors don't know why. I'm not 100% sure though since I don't remember if I finished the book.

message 11: by Andy (new)

Andy | 2124 comments There's a YA novel about a kid who misses the Singularity because at the moment humanity ascended, he had just been hypnotized, so from his point of view everyone has disappeared by the time he comes to. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of this book...

Andy Phillips | 241 comments Michele wrote: "Maybe The Children of Men?"

I think you can rule out 'The Children of Men' because nobody spontaneously disappears. The population is gradually growing older because no babies have been born for something like 20 years.

It's a very sloooooooow disappearance lol

maybe The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham? There is an apocalypse and almost everyone is gone, though I think they were eaten by the triffids rather than completely disappeared. They do set up at a farmhouse at the end as far as I remember.

message 16: by Amy (new)

Amy | 3 comments Could it be The Disappearance by Philip Wylie? Within the first few pages, the men suddenly disappear from the women's world & all the women from the men's. My mom went thru "what's the name of that book" with that particular book back in 1988 before the age of the internet. I have no idea how we found it but its an awesome book. It does show you how "dumbed down" our literature has become over the years but its a great read.

It is not The Day of the Triffids. People don't just disappear in that. There is illness, blindness and Triffids, but no mass disappearances.

Bargle | 1763 comments Never mind. Lead character is a man, not a girl in this one.

Long shot, but maybe The Death of Grass (AKA "No Blade of Grass") also by John Christopher.

message 20: by Sam (new)

Sam Browning (Idontevenread) | 5 comments If this helps, the start of the book is a girl waking up to find her family missing, then she goes outside to find everyone has disappeared.

Sam ~~
Any detail you can add helps narrow it down, so it can be solved.

You can "bump" your thread every month or so. This pushes your thread back to the top of the folder instead of languishing here on page 177 where fewer eyes will see it. Get back in the game! Bump!
You can do this by typing a new comment at the end of the thread, or even by typing the word "bump."
Good luck!

SamSpayedPI | 2315 comments Empty World for Emma's link. It was already suggested (#19 above) but Sam hasn't been back to confirm or deny.

message 32: by Andy Phillips (new)

Andy Phillips | 241 comments I don't think it's 'Empty World' as that features a virus/plague, not an unexplained disappearance. Sam also said that the, "the start of the book is a girl waking up to find her family missing, then she goes outside to find everyone has disappeared". I think the protagonist of 'Empty World' is a boy and his parents have already died in a car accident (although he does live with his grandparents I think, so they are family).

ETA: I've read Gone now and it doesn't match. Gone is set in California and has many more survivors.

Sarah (drsarah) | 177 comments I can confirm that it is *not* 'Empty World', which I read as a child (unless the OP has really badly misremembered it). Don't know what it actually is, though.

Sam, I added some plot details to the topic header, so your book might be recognized from the header alone. Feel free to update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website – not the Mobile website or app.

Are you sure it was YA? Were most of the perspectives from teenagers?

Do you think it was traditionally published as well, or did it seem more like e-book only?

Survivors by Terry "Dalek" Nation was about a virus that killed 98% of the people. There were bodies everywhere so does not sound like seeker's description.

Please note you can bump your own threads, but not others' threads, because the group is so large.
