For simple and understandable english among indian authors, i would recommend RK Narayan. Though you might have enjoyed Immortals of Meluha, i believe that isn't the right book to 'improve' english as it flows more in the other direction ;)
Anyways thanks for starting this thread, quite a few of my friends and cousins asked me similar qstn and it would be great to get some recommendations.
I remember that my English teacher suggested us Lord of the Flies by William Golding to improve our English. I really loved it! It isn't that difficult to read, it has an interesting plot and it isn't too long.Other "easy" English books that I can remember are The Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti, India Was One by An Indian and eFiction India Vol. 1 Issue 07.
What about Amitav Gosh? I haven't read his books in English but they have such an interesting plot that you read them willingly also if they are long.
Lord of the flies is a wonderful read Dely, it was part of our curriculum too, when i was about 14yrs old.@Qube, those are some very sensible suggestions...
RK Narayan is one of the best
Shall rack my brains and my bookshelves and come up with a list later :-)

The Agatha Christie novels are very good for someone learning English. They are written quite simply, but the plot is generally gripping. When I was learning French, I read them all in French and found them very useful.
