Bonnie (bonbayel) | 48 comments This is a YA book about a 10 year old girl in Kabul who has to dress as a boy to provide for her family after her father is imprisoned by the Taliban for having studied in England, and teaching history to both boys and girls. What a mess we've made of this world!
I understand it has been made into a movie, which we are looking forward to seeing. This is part of a trilogy. I've ordered the other 2 now, because we're left at the end of the Breadwinner not knowing what has become of her mother and siblings traveling to what was originally a safe city for her sister's wedding, but is now also captured by the Taliban.

I had not heard about this series or the movie. It sounds like pretty heavy themes, what age range do you think it's appropriate for?

Bonnie (bonbayel) | 48 comments The book can be read by a mature middle school child. We just saw the graphic movie last night. It was very well done, only loosely taken from the first and second books of the trilogy. The speakers had Afghani accents, which might be hard to understand. It was quite scary. Little violence was shown, but the aftermath of violence is, with a little blood and bruises. She also tells a continuing, frightening folk story, which is not in the book. The script for the film was written by the author of the books. I'd say the film is mire apprpriate for HS, unless the child already reads scary books.
