- If a book has over 100K ratings, I’ve shelved it already.
- Romance is the genre I’m least interested in right now.
- Anything written before 1900 is a no-go.
Genres:
1) Romance: YA, male or dual pov, the boy being unpopular/loner/nerd/weird/mentally-ill (NOT angst-heavy. If someone dies, it’s not for me). John Green novels are a no-go, lgbt is a no-go. Also need books where the majority of interaction is online (see romance-online shelf, of previous rules only “no lgbt” applies). (The Sea of Tranquility, Radiance, Win Some, Lose Some, Better off Friends, The Rosie Project, Stoner & Spaz, Love Virtually)
3) Non-genre fiction: it has to have something cool/strange as the premise, smth that CAN happen in RL, but probably will not. (The Magus (Fowles), Fight Club, Foucault's Pendulum, The Da Vinci Code, A Long Way Down).
4) Sci-fi: anything, really. But I have 2001-2015 books pretty much shelved, if it’s over 1000 ratings.
5) Horror: only if characters/plot is good and if it also belongs in SFF. (Clive Barker stuff)
6) Non-fiction: in-depth books about literary theory and the craft of writing. Not the introductory stuff, I need the scholarly stuff - semiotics, semantics, smart words that start with S, I guess.
- Anime-inspired (anything that reminds you of jap light novels or anime/manga - tropes, character types, atmosphere)
Specific book:
- Books like The Magus (Fowles). See my later-magus and planned-magus shelves. Not on those shelves but fits criteria is Shadowland (Straub), Diary of a drug fiend and Library at mount char.

2) Fantasy: the “cozy” variety - more character-driven, multiple POVs ONLY IF they are constantly together. I don’t like the standard “fight and travel” novels.
(Harry Potter, The Goblin Emperor, Nevernight, Uprooted, The Library at Mount Char, Strange the Dreamer)
3) Non-genre fiction: it has to have something cool/strange as the premise, smth that CAN happen in RL, but probably will not. (The Magus (Fowles), Fight Club, Foucault's Pendulum, The Da Vinci Code, A Long Way Down).

General preferences:
- Anything with skateboards or poi.
- Anything about language
(Embassytown, Encrypted)
- Plot twists, many many plot twists. Love them to death.
- Smart protagonists, who show intelligence by scheming OR solving complex problems.
(Six of crows, Sherlock Holmes, White Cat, Red Rising, Ender's Game, Half a King, Name of the wind, Worm, Twig).
- Underdogs, one going against the grain.
- Anime-inspired (anything that reminds you of jap light novels or anime/manga - tropes, character types, atmosphere)
