For five-year-old Jack, room is everything. Room is where he was born, where he eats, sleeps, and plays. Room is his world. To Ma, room is the hell hole her abductor has been keeping her for the past seven years.
Room by Emma Donoghue is about a girl who was kidnapped at the age of nineteen. She gets raped every night by her abductor “Old Nick” who eventually gets her pregnant. After she has her son Jack, everything changed for Ma. She now has a reason to live. Without jack, she was empty inside, she felt like there was no reason to be alive. Once Jack came along, she had a reason to wake up every morning and be grateful considering her situation. Ma had to make a lot of hard decisions of telling her young child about the situation they were in. Because she didn’t want her son to know there was a whole world outside of room that she couldn’t let him live in, she had to tell her son that everything he saw on TV was fake. When Jack turned five, Ma decided she couldn’t live in an eleven by eleven room anymore so she starts to come up with a plan to escape room. When Ma tries telling Jack about what’s real and not in the world he starts to freak out because he doesn’t believe her. Jack has only met two people in his life, Ma and Old Nick so it is very hard for him to believe his mom that there are other people living outside of room.
Room is a heart wrenching story that shows the special bond between Ma and Jack. This story brings out the limitless bond between a mother and her child. The relationship between Ma and Jack is indescribable, they have so much love and faith in each other which makes the story so compelling.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. The narrator of the book is five-year-old Jack which makes the book super interesting and unique. The author picked the right character to narrate the book because it gives us a sense of what is going on in Jacks mind. I really enjoyed reading this book even though it was emotional. I found myself having a hard time to put the book down because I was so intrigued of what was going to happen next.
