Jessica - Where the Bookends (jessica_danow) So, I started this book yesterday and read the first 2 chapters... I don't know if I can read this with all the flowery language and similes and metaphors. Anyone else having this problem?

You've done a lot better than I have.

Gellie (allthisnerdyness) | 5 comments ok, so far I am really liking it. I really like Mia as the main character. She is an assassin but yet you can still see her fears. Oh, and her shadow makes a great hype man! I am not sure that I am doing a very good job explaining her as a character, but I just think she is well written.

As for the two guys on the boat they deserved what they got. The nerve of them to think she had to give her body away because she was the only woman on the boat, but not that the guy she threatened went and told another guy that she threatened him. I am sorry but I couldn't remember their names..lol

The writing is definitely different. It took me a little while to get into it. I'm also listening to the audiobook and I actually think it read's easier. I love Mia as a character. I love how fierce and determined she is. I also love Mr. Kindly and Mia's power with shadows.

This book is also a bit violent. Especially that desert seen with the krakens.

Also, is anyone confused with all the different political figures, the gods, and the suns?

Ok I really disliked this book until about 70 ish pages into it when we finally started to get dialogue. If you stick with it it gets way way better. For all of you who are wanting to DNF it, push through until at least 100 pages in and see if that doesn't change your mind

I'm loving the school setting and the pace is finally picking up. I can definitely see where the down falls are going to happen with mr. Kindly but I love his presence in the book. Mia is definitely a morally grey character and I can't quite get a read on Tric but I'm intrigued. So glad I'm finally liking this book more

I agree! Once you get passed all the world building and introduction to all the characters the plot gets really intense.

yay! I'm glad you're enjoying it more! I love the school setting as well. I hope Tric is the love interest (if there is one haha).

Julie Jerles | 28 comments I've tried to read this twice now. I put it down this time when I found myself reading the same paragraph over and over again. I just don't even know if I can make myself read a 100 pages. :(

I made a promise to myself this year that if I book wasn't grabbing me I wasn't going to force it. I'll probably pick it up again in the future. Not going to write it of entirely, but it's not working for me at this point. I am definitely tuning in for the live show because I can't wait to hear your opinions when you do finish it.

I am confused about the gods and political figures. I should have probably taken notes at the beginning.

It explains more as you get through the book. I'm about half way and it's finally starting to explain more about all the political figures and the Illuminati.

No worries if you aren't able to get through it. The writing style is very different especially with all the info dump we get in the beginning. The audiobook is helping me a lot.

Tricia (TellHerAStory) (tellherastory) | 35 comments I just started this last night, and I agree that having the audiobook helps a lot.

For me, pausing mid scene to read footnotes really breaks up my flow and causes me to get distracted easily. Since I started listening to the audiobook, I'm now flying through it.

I'm still not sure how I feel about all of the footnotes. I'm currently 55 pages in, and it is really an info-dump of epic proportions. Not to say that the information isn't interesting, but it's hard to keep all of it organized in my brain.

As for the violence and language, that isn't bothering me. Maybe because I read a decent balance of YA and Adult Fantasy. *shrug*

Anyhow, still unsure how I'm liking it. I might have a more concrete feeling by the time I finish Part 1.

I agree that the audiobook helps a lot with footnotes. You should be getting to dialogue soon. The story starts to take off around page 75-100.

I have a couple credits for audible... maybe I will check out the audiobook, then I can sell the paper copy to recoup the costs... Great thinking!
