Snippet from Shadow Stalker Episode 1: The Hidden Truth

The soldiers’ footfalls faded as they headed back into the forest. I could hear the snapping of branches as the demon, bear or whatever it was, crashed its way through the trees. Deakan and I inched back over to the entrance, and he parted the ivy. Jade still held my arm in a vice grip.

"That thing is big for a bear, and what's that smell? It's like rotting flesh," Deakan said in a hushed tone, then shifted his head toward me.

He was right on both counts. I crinkled my nose while I attempted to place where I had seen this creature before. It was about twice the size and bulk of a bear, and its back hunched forward as though it used its arms for balance or to aid with forward movement. Its legs were much shorter than its arms, so it wasn’t swift, but it was strong. It knocked down smaller trees and branches getting in its way as it followed the soldiers who had already disappeared into the forest.

Snippet from Shadow Stalker Episode 2: The Delohi-Saqu's Fate

"Who's there?"

No one answered.

It was just my imagination, I told myself until something cold and wet brushed my neck. The thing sniffed at me, sending shivers through my body that had nothing to do with the cool damp air. I gasped and stiffened. My first instinct was to move away from whatever it was as fast as possible, but my training took over. I slowed my breathing, holding myself as still as I was able. But my heart pounded uncontrollably, and I would have sworn the sound echoed off the walls of the cavern.

It sniffed at me again, this time nudging my face with its nose, as it let out a low guttural growl. Its fetid breath gave me the impression it had eaten recently. At least it wouldn't be hungry anytime soon. Besides, if it meant to harm me, I'm sure it would have done so by now. But what did it want? Better yet, how did it get down here? I attempted to inch myself away from it, but it growled again and nudged me hard with its head. When I froze again, it gripped my arm in its jaws and started dragging me across the floor.

Renee Scattergood | 17 comments Who is your favorite fantasy author?

I have two. Terry Goodkind, author of the Sword of Truth series, which I'm reading again at the moment.

I also love the indie author, Lindsay Buroker, author of The Emperor's Edge series. The first book in that series is free if you want to check it out!

Snippet from Shadow Stalker Episode 3: Shadows' Betrayal

I ripped my hands out of Kado's and opened my eyes, but the image was still there.

"Stop, please," I begged.

The vision cleared and Kado took me by the shoulders. "I'm sorry, Auren. I hated doing that to you."

"I can't…I…That," My sobs garbled my words, so I gave up trying to speak. Instead, I wrapped my arms around Kado, gripping his shirt in tight fists, and buried my head in his chest.

To my surprise, Kado held me as I wept. I was a monster. Drevin was right about me. Maybe it made more sense to hand me over to him and let him kill me. It seemed even more senseless now to allow people to continue dying because of me. I wasn't worth protecting.

Renee Scattergood | 17 comments What do you love most about fantasy?

For me it's a temporary escape from reality. Sort of like a mini vacation from life where I can just be somewhere else and maybe even be someone else. Then when I return to reality, I feel more refreshed, like I can handle whatever life wants to throw at me.

How about you?

Renee Scattergood | 17 comments Welcome to day two of the B2B CyCon! I didn't get started this morning like I wanted. It seems I'm sick again, so I'm going to just post casually today. Let's start with this:

Who is your favorite fantasy character of all time and why?

I love Yoda. Not only is Star Wars one of my favorite stories (and the one that inspired my imagination), but Yoda just cracks me up. He can be so serious in one moment and then like a rambunctious toddler in the next.

Tell me about your favorite character.

If not, you can catch them here: http://b2bcycon.com/blog-hop/

Oh my goodness! So many to choose from! I really love Frodo. He just keeps going even when the odds seem impossible. He goes beyond his breaking point. He’s the perfect example of ANYONE can do ANYTHING.
