Cyberpunk is getting its biggest push since the late ‘90s, but why don’t audiences seem to care?

So far, I think it's the type of stories that are being told. The violent drug-addled loser misogynist as a protagonist is just not attractive to the general public. If Ready Player One also tanks at the box office, I may reconsider my opinion. But right now, I think audiences are already burned out on the grimdark superhero movies, and just don't want to go grimmer and darker.
I was really hoping that this would be the year that Cyberpunk was fully jacked into the general public's consciousness, for completely selfish reasons. But it doesn't seem to be so.Ready Player One could be the one I suppose. And it looks like the early opinions are positive...

Is it the genre itself or is it the type of stories that are being told?
