Over spring break, I finished Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler. It took readers through Zelda’s life, beginning just before she and F. Scott Fitzgerald met and ending with her reacting to the news of his death and funeral. It took readers through her and F. Scott’s tumultuous relationship and their interactions with other famous “lost generation” members, like Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso. What I really enjoyed about this novel was how it was told from Zelda’s point of view. It was really cool to read basically a biography through the eyes of that person. I also enjoyed how F. Scott Fitzgerald was not the main character; it made Zelda the main character even though her husband is more well known. Before I read this novel, I knew basically nothing about Zelda except that she was a partier and drank heavily. This novel gave her a lot of depth and showed the many aspects of her character and some of her reasons for doing the things she did. I liked how the author wrote about Zelda’s life before she met her husband, when she was a normal girl from Alabama. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes historical novels or novels with a strong female character. However, I think that anyone who reads this novel will end up thoroughly enjoying it like I did. Literally once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down and I hope others will feel the same!
