The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen is about a seventeen-year-old girl named Jessica. Jessica is an amazing athlete, shes pretty and popular. She had everything she ever wanted. Until one day when she got into an accident that took her leg. The only thing that made her who she is was running and now with one leg she knows she will never run again. She stays in the hospital for a couple weeks and undergoes painful physical therapy. Jessica, with the help of her friend Fiona finally goes back to school and struggles to keep up after missing three weeks. Luckily she meets Rosa who is a math genius with cerebral palsy, Rosa helps Jessica with math and they soon become really good friends. Everything in Jessica’s life is starting to go back to normal except there is something missing and that’s running. Everything changes though when she invited to meet with the track coach who shows her videos of one legged runners running with running prosthetics. Now the only thing she has to do is to make her dream a reality. The Running Dream is an overall good read. Losing a leg is not relatable to most people but the feelings Jessica experiences are easy to connect with. At first I felt sorry for Jessica but the more she progressed the more I was inspired. The things she goes though at school feel so real and I could almost feel what she was going though. This book was easy to understand and I learned some good life lessons. For example Rosa teaches Jessica to look at people not their condition. I wasn’t able to put it down and was constantly reading wanting to know more. Something about the book sucks you in and you lose all sense of time. For Instance in about the middle of the book Jessica gets her fake leg and has to learn how to walk again and I don’t know why but I couldn’t put the book down. This is defininty a book you should consider reading. This book is defininty a good read.
