Growing up surrounded by drugs, violence, and gang members is the only life Sonia Rodriguez knew. She was born into a family where violence occurred regularly and drugs were used daily. Ever since Sonia was a little girl, she was raped and abused regularly by her own family members. No one cared for Sonia in her family so no one believed her when she told her family she was being raped by her uncle and cousin. Sonia’s mother did nothing to protect her daughter for the abuse she was getting for no reason.
As Sonia became a young teen, she started hanging out with members from one of the largest street gangs in America, The Latin Kings, who were friends with her older sister. Because her sister hung out with these people, gang members were constantly at her house. Sonia was threatened by rival gangs and decided to drop out of school and become a gang member herself.
Sonia eventually became the leader of her gang and was known as “Lady Q.” Lady Q was well respected in the gang life and everyone knew who she was. Being a part of one of the biggest gangs in America turned Sonia into someone she wished to never be. She wanted to be different then her family, she wanted a real future for herself. But because she grew up in such a violent environment, she was bound to turn out like the rest of her family.
Lady Q went through a lot as a gang member, she got into fist fights, sold tons of drugs, got shot at by her own gang, had a child at the age of 18, and did time in prison. After having her first child, she tried to get her life back together. She told herself that she would be nothing like her mother and be a great mother to her own daughter. Although Sonia’s family still didn’t support her after having a child, she felt okay because she had the baby’s father whom she loved very much. Not much later did Sonia’s baby daddy turn out to be violent and abuse her. Sonia let the abusing get so bad that he started to hit their daughter, but she couldn’t do anything about it.
Sonia had another child and soon started to change her life for the better. As her daughter got older, she turned out to be rebellious and join a gang herself even though Sonia didn’t approve. After losing her daughter to the gang life, all Sonia cared about was saving herself and her son from the terrible streets that surrounded them. Sonia survived all the horrible things that come with being a gang member. It cost her her family, friends, education, and almost her life but she survived it all.
I would definitely recommend this book. It shows what it’s like to be a women and be a part of a gang. This book is very intense because of all the details it gives to show the pain Sonia has gone through since she was little. This book is very violent but it was definitely worth the read.
