Maybe a little of both. Some people just like to follow things through to the end. They want to close the case that they started. Others, like her partner, don't care. Ballard is probably one of those people who like to see things through to completion. She also would know that if she wants to get any positive attention, she has to solve the case, not just do the initial investigation and pass it on. She will be stuck on the Late Show if she doesn't do something to get noticed.
She just punished unfairly and was a good cop before being banished to the late show. How do you turn it all off? She’s not checked out like her partner Jenkins and still cares about her cases. She may be trying to prove something but I think that’s second to her drive to solve cases.
