How did they transport the creature through the jungles, onto the small boat, on four different airport jags then into the Occam (of Razor fame) while feeding iit all the while and keeping it in water? The Tank is the answer, but they didn't take the tank through the jungle in the first place. Did they have some native Amazonian tribe build a tank out of...umm...bamboo and some mysterious glue?

It's possible that the tank was sent to Strickland once Hoyt received word of the asset's capture. Before that, my best guess is the creature was kept under poor conditions--very likely trapped in a net while on the Josephina. I might be remembering the story wrong, but I think part of the boat was flooded, so that's one way to keep him alive.
