This thread is for quoting lines in this book that we think are great.

I see that Stephanie already got a jump on this and posted a few in the original file announcing the April group read!

Stephanie Spence | 8 comments hi - Yes, I'm excited to be in the group. There's a lot of great lines, but I'm still going with my favorite so far: "... this must be what it feels like to swallow lightening." Such a peek into her process of struggling with hearing she had Parkinson's. Her interpretation of the Yoga Sutra's is hilarious. Too many great lines to list.

Hi folks!

Here are the lines I loved/lines that made me stop and think:

"You need to get into your body and use what's going on to propel you forward however you can." - (Email from her teacher Jenny Brill)

"They're the verbal equivalent of being jumped into a gang you don't want to be in." (Describing the words "progressive," "incurable" and "chronic")

"What you come looking for, you come looking with."

"Yoga rooms are full of secrets."

Yoga: "In all its variations, it's the practice of letting the sludge out. And leaving it there."

"But ya gotta keep going. Fall down seven times, get up eight."

And last but not least..."You are a cucumber that has turned into a pickle."

:)

"I'm leading a double life. I'm John Wayne Gacy. I present myself in potentially awkward social situations as a laughing, colorful clown to gain your regard. If you ask friends and neighbors, they will tell you I'm normal and that I keep to myself. Meanwhile, there's a crawlspace in the basement where I've buried my secrets. It's starting to get pretty crowded down there, but they are mine." ( P. 81)

"I wasn't exactly in a rush to find yoga at twenty-one years old. When you're in the clutches of a drinking problem you don't really sit around thinking, I should really knock this shit off and go get my Eastern philosophy on." (p 51)

"...with all that going on I really had no time to get to the bottom of things even though yoga teachers are definitely not supposed to look sickly. They're supposed to be a triple swirl of health and pluck and able-bodiedness. They're supposed to radiate with the light of a thousand suns." (p.93)

So many great lines to choose from! Here are some of my faves from the first part of the book.

"I know it's not his fault, but he may as well have murdered a unicorn right in front of me. A smasher of hope. And rainbows."
(p. 17)

"Three years. That's how long this has been going on now. A thousand days in a row of what the fuck." (p. 18)

" 'What's wrong with me' is the hell spawn of self-deprecation and self-doubt." (p. 21)

"Five days and four nights in the middle of nowhere being all healthy, kickin' it in my own redwood cabin with a fireplace and a deck where I'd drink tea in the mornings gazing at a contemplative lake.... Except now I don't want to. Somehow I'd totally forgotten that I hate retreats." (p 192)

Kris (krisg11) | 43 comments "Of all the sorrows, regret is the heaviest. I would be sorry. I would be sober. I would do yoga. I would be sweeter, softer, happy-go-luckier, better. Time would make it easier. Time does that. The cliché is true: time heals."
