Juniper | 2 comments Hi all, long time lurker, and now in need of aid!
So I know a lot about the plot, but can't for the life of me remember the title or author.
So the book is set in medieval Japan in a wealthy household. A girl's father is killed by a very wealthy someone, and his henchmen destroy her family home and kill the servants. She is the only one to survive. She moves to a city area, gets conned out of her very expensive hair comb (being a naive noble girl with no experience), and finds a kitchen to give her scraps.
I can not remember how she gets out of the situation, but I do remember that she is picked up by some sort of trainer person, who teaches her to weave magic and images out of thin air. She is encouraged to train for a noble's ball, where all the wealthiest men will attend so that she can seduce her father's killer, and kill him herself so that she can avenge her father. Her new trainer is harsh on her: she must learn to dance to weave these magical images. At some point along the line, she meets a mysterious black sailor who is a love interest.
She is eventually ready for the ball. Her trainer knows she is ready as she weaves a beautiful dress that I remember looked inky blue like the night sky, including sparkling stars, however, the dress was only an illusion that she had weaved. She goes to the ball, dances beautifully, finds her father's killer, leads him to a room, and does successfully kill him. She escapes with her dark-skinned love interest and that's the end!
If you know the book, then i would be immensely grateful!
As i said, i read it around 2011/12.

EDIT: It has been solved! The book is Shadows on the Moon by Zoë Marriott.

No idea what the book is Juniper, but when it's found I'll be adding it to Mt. Ift's TBR. Although actually, looking at all the TBRs I have--make that mountain range Ift's TBR. :o}
